Republican House majority leader Eric Cantor praised Andrew Cuomo on the floor of the House on Friday, citing the governor's intervention on behalf of the city's charter schools in a debate about a national charter-school bill.
"In New York City, the mayor there, Bill de Blasio, recently attempted to deliver on his threat to kick public charter schools out of the space that they share, or were planning to share, with other traditional public schools," said Cantor, who has previously used de Blasio as a foil in making his case for charters. "This kind of activity completely undermines the essence of education reform."
Cuomo intervened on behalf of Eva Moskowitz's Success Academy after the de Blasio administration announced it would rescind three co-location plans that were originally authorized under former mayor Michael Bloomberg. At Cuomo's urging, the state budget passed last month included protections for charter co-locations, and de Blasio recently announced it had found new space for Success students in Catholic schools.
"Fortunately for New York City students, Governor Cuomo did not allow this to become a reality," Cantor continued. "Those kids who otherwise would have ended up without a school in the fall now have one. And this bill provides even more opportunities for states like New York State to help high quality charter schools to expand and replicate."
So Eric Cantor, lover of all things chartery, reformy and vouchery, loves him some Andy Cuomo too.
And why not?
When it comes to the movement to privatize public schools, Cantor and Cuomo are on the same side.
The two also share a hatred of public sector unions, a scorn for government workers and a love of Wall Street and hedge fundie cash.
Cuomo needs a new lieutenant governor to run on his ticket this fall since Bob Duffy decided to step down.
It's a pity Eric Cantor already has a gig in Washington because to be quite honest, he'd be a perfect running mate for Andrew Cuomo here in NY State.
Rob Astorino has my vote, along with my entire family and some friends who know that Cuomo is a piece of trash. I dont care that Astorinonis a republican. He's got my vote. If you have a brain, get out and vote for him and spread the word. This scumbag Cuomo needs to feel the loss.
ReplyDeleteFive years ago I wouldn't have dreamed of saying this, but I too will be voting for Rob Astorino. I voted for Howie Hawkins the first time around, but I seriously want to see Cuomo gone. I'm not sure about my family, but I have several friends who will be voting for Astorino. Cuomo is horrible. He's the worst governor within my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI am voting for Howie again, his running mate is a NYC teacher. We cannot put Astorino in. He is too pro charters...
ReplyDeleteWhen a chicken hawk punk like Cantor supports you...you have problems if you're a "Democrat."
ReplyDeleteCuomo is an all-star Republican.
ReplyDeleteI would wish that the Democratic Party kicks Cuomo out and does not let him run on the Democratic line.
ReplyDeleteAstorino has my vote. (another lifelong Democrat)
ReplyDeleteI will be supporting Howie Hawkins, who is seeking the Green Party nomination for governor, and Brian Jones, who is seeking the lieutenant governor nomination for the Greens.
