Would the NYSED? Doubtful - I am a high school teacher, so I'm not as well versed on how they'll handle the kindergarten assessments, but I know on the Regents exams, that kind of creativity would be punished. There is a narrow sense of what is "correct" - I have seen kids write some really creative responses on the Regents, but if it doesn't fit the scoring rubric, the students is penalized for their creativity.reality-based educatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01712885202661371924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-31475951128859213992013-08-18T17:16:16.943-04:002013-08-18T17:16:16.943-04:00Great article. Thank you for summing up the parts of the big picture that every 99 percenter in this country should be aware of.

I want to add, as a K teacher, I was required to administer the math task. There was a similar question involving fish and fish bowls.
The question asked was: Show how many different ways _____ can put the fish in the fish bowls.

One of my students drew a little fishnet with fish in it as one of the ways you can put fish in the bowl. I melted when I saw what he had cleverly done. But! was his considered correct? The awkward defense of private equity he performed on Meet The Press in 2012 exposed him as a Wall Street/hedge fundie shill. Does the current mayor not have enough power? Certainly within the city he does. I suppose Weiner means expanding mayoral control at the expense of Albany, but frankly, I'm not too jejune about putting more power into the hands of one official.reality-based educatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01712885202661371924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-91999153809483969582013-08-18T12:55:11.914-04:002013-08-18T12:55:11.914-04:00Alas, parents in wealthier suburbs like Port Jeffe...Alas, parents in wealthier suburbs like Port Jefferson are going to get notice when they protest state ed policies than parents in, say Freeport, or the Bronx.

But it is great to see all these parents and children and teachers together protesting the radical public education privatization agenda of the King.reality-based educatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01712885202661371924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-18854753857545965672013-08-18T12:09:20.712-04:002013-08-18T12:09:20.712-04:00Re: "These wealthy, greedy oligarchs are usin...Re: "These wealthy, greedy oligarchs are using this education reform movement to educate the next generation of kids to expect to have to work longer and harder for less"

The reformers have their ideas from God. We're supposed to bow down before them. They are successful and can send their kids to Waldorf, Montessori ... We're supposed to shut up and listen and follow orders. That's why from Chicago to Philadelphia to here we have no say in our education system. Port Jefferson is on the north shore of LI, therefore they're allowed to speak and we're not. Our lack of democracies is a circular loop: no parent right of input, therefore parent's involvement stays small. The reformers like it that way. They can get more power but saying, "look the parents aren't involved."

They do the thinking so that we don't have to. Never mind that the 8/7/13 test results were a disaster. It's king of the hill. They've won, therefore, they're right. Cory Booker is going to continue this as his signature domestic policy issue. Watch him say, "This is an issue that we can all come together and agree on."
We just have to stay quiet and blindly follow orders and not make waves this fall.GeoKarohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11463970361326939857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-86318437390043927822013-08-18T11:42:24.153-04:002013-08-18T11:42:24.153-04:00Weiner in the channel 7 debate defending Bloomberg...Weiner in the channel 7 debate defending Bloomberg's attachment to the new Common Core regime.

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/politics&id=9204756GeoKarohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11463970361326939857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-57688895148448927092013-08-18T11:02:58.397-04:002013-08-18T11:02:58.397-04:00I grew up in that far flung suburban community and...I grew up in that far flung suburban community and was educated in that very district. After leaving it (as soon as I could) to come to New York City to teach, I never once thought or suspected that their interests or actions would coincide with mine. Clearly I was wrong!! Strange times when a cynic like me can say he's proud of his suburban school district. Special shout out to King for bringing us all (urban and suburban alike) together.
