Unfortunately I have seen many of these issues become more and more prevalent in the lives of my students. I have never seen students as stressed as I have this year, and I know that the common core, coupled with less time for the arts, plays a major role in this.NYCDOEnutshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10692665524124012171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-67386051702445976442014-03-23T16:13:45.648-04:002014-03-23T16:13:45.648-04:00Let's see what our new mayor and chancellor ac...Let's see what our new mayor and chancellor actually attempt to do to address this destruction of souls. My teachers were great about rushing to help students who were experiencing bullying, suicidal thoughts and physical abuse. MOST TEACHERS ARE. But, those same teachers who take time to ensure the welfare of their students--and even save lives in the process- are given no credit. The recession hit the families of our students really hard. The results were students who had to raise themselves, in schools with overworked guidance counselors. And students with special needs--forget it. The inclusion classes often had no special education teacher (or even a para) to help those students struggling to pass classes that were difficult for them. I follow your writing because you tell the truth about the school system. But this is by far the best you have done. Someone needs to wake up and realize that schools have always treated the whole child. In college you teach the subject, in K-12, you teach the child. Making students college ready doesn't mean treating them like college students. Or worse, treating them like new recruits at a Wall Street firm--if they can't be the best and brightest or work the hardest, get rid of them (like Success Academy).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-46657161439057087032014-03-23T11:03:22.244-04:002014-03-23T11:03:22.244-04:00(Pardon the grammar...on my auto shit keyboard)(Pardon the grammar...on my auto shit keyboard)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-13056259583373066242014-03-23T11:01:06.614-04:002014-03-23T11:01:06.614-04:00Also...we have 14 year olds blowing innocent bysta...Also...we have 14 year olds blowing innocent bystanders brains out on city buses...what is the "new standards" doing to at risk kids, who were already hated school. Principals are seen in their buildings only as teacher evaluators. They have almost no connection to real students and the lives that they are leading. Pathetic. And what's worse, they are so attached to pleasing their superiors and so attached to their salaries that they don't even question the situation that they find themselves in. So, Farina is simply wasting her time talking to these useless paper pushers. At least that is the situation in the large urban areas where schools are under assault from the edReformers.
