Of course, what's happening to our schools and our kids is terrible. But this blog is great. It's not only informative but at times so well written. I don't know how you do it, really. To teach all day while keeping track of the rolling ball of madness we call government up in Albany and then to actually formulate coherent thoughts to commit to the internet...that's a tall order. Hang in there, RBE and company. You're exactly the kind of people our country needs. In fact, if you read history, more often than not it's people like you who made our country great -not the toadies and flunkies and kiss ups who are willing to grovel at the feet of Tisch and her ilk. They make me feel ILL. You guys inspire me to keep on going.
-John OgozalekAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-44236004773763482512015-04-13T04:45:14.252-04:002015-04-13T04:45:14.252-04:00This would be like bringing Dick Cheney back to ta...This would be like bringing Dick Cheney back to take over our nation's foreign policy. Why can't the BOR challenge it legally. Yes, the legislature is free to do what it just did. But, the BOR is empowered by the state constitution to establish educational policy. Why can't it formulate its own plan over the next couple of months and pass it? Wouldn't it trump what the legislature just did because it came after the Assembly/Senate acted?

Think NYC term limits. They were enacted by voters through two referendums. NYC Council passed a local law overriding the referendums. The courts said if the public wants to get the term limits back, it can do so through another referendum. In other words, the last action by either the City Council or the voters counts. Why not the same with the BOR? Why can't we get one of the Regents to push this?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628172601886929098.post-23249486218812499682015-04-12T19:53:26.241-04:002015-04-12T19:53:26.241-04:00In other countries the state police would have sto...In other countries the state police would have stormed the Board of Regents after all of its failures and taken away all of the members. It's a thing. The insane rhetoric from...Yeah. It's a thing. The insane rhetoric from both sides regarding the profession and how it's like a requirement to be in it for the love of it, etc etc really makes it hard to be up front and clear about it being A JOB that pays the bills and enables a life.

It's actually a whole other avenue of rhetorical push back that we could give them, but don't as a group. Pointing out the economic impacts of firing teachers to the communities we live in. Where I work up in the Hudson Valley, so many communities have a middle class that is literally built upon teachers. We are the ones keepin our homes up, buying cars, eating out occasionally, etc. the economy really sucks and teachers are one of the last vestiges of a working middle class. Outside of the wildly gentrified areas where there are huge crops of folks moving up from the city to find their more authentic selves, it's TEACHERS who are keeping economies going. Take a ride on any road up here at 6am in October and compare it to August. Roads empty in August.

Outside of all the jabber about schools ad their role and how they work, in NY State the simple fact is that teachers are one of the few nails keeping the facade of a middle class tacked up in soooo many towns and small cities.

And Cuomo wants to wiggle that nail out. Idiot. And we as teachers don't want to talk about this economic piece too much because we are afraid to say that we aren't volunteers and go to work to get paid, like every other non-slave on the planet.
