Canada Defends Black In Daily News

The intrigue in the Black/Canada/Bloomberg story grows:

Controversial incoming schools Chancellor Cathie Black has one big fan: the educator reported to have been Mayor Bloomberg's first choice for the job.

"I'm in the minority, but I think it's a tremendous appointment," Harlem Children's Zone leader Geoffrey Canada told the Daily News yesterday.

"Going with a traditional educator at this point in time that does not have outside connections would have been a mistake," he said. "If we're going to improve education in the short term, we need to go outside the traditional education hierarchy."

Canada, whose network of charter schools has attracted international acclaim, would not comment on reports that he was Bloomberg's top pick. But he said the mayor knows what he's doing.

"The mayor has an impeccable talent for picking top-notch leaders," Canada said. "He has faith that Cathie Black is the right person, and I'm going to follow his lead."

So late last week, Canada or somebody close to Canada seemed to be leaking the story that Bloomberg approached Canada first about being chancellor, thus publicly undercutting Cathie Black.

Now Canada, who coyly won't say in this News article if Bloomberg DID ask him to be chancellor, says he backs Bloomberg's choice of Black.

Dunno what to think anymore about this except for one thing - the only thing For Profit Geoffrey Canada likes to do more in this world than talk is talk about himself.

Hey, Geoffrey, why don'tcha give it a rest for a news cycle or so?

  1. "The mayor has an impeccable talent for picking top-notch leaders." The most amazing thing I have read. What a joke.

  2. It really feels like he got drunk one night at a party and asked Black if she wanted to be chancellor.
