"I didn't hear the governor today, but I can tell you I've worked with the governor for a long time. I've known him for a long time. We've worked very well for the last couple of months. We both have exactly the same interest, of getting the best teachers that we can in front of the classroom. Both of us have to deal with tough budgets. We're going to have to reduce expenses at the state level and the city level, and we're going to have to make sure we provide the best services we possibly can with less money. I'm committed to making sure there is the best teacher that we can possibly get in front of every student, and we will do that. Sadly, we are going to have to lay off some teachers. We just don't have the money. Every agency has taken a cut. The teachers' cut is from the last Program to Eliminate the Gap. We just didn't want to do that in the middle of the school year.
"So this is really just catching up. We still have a $600 million budget deficit to deal with, and we are going to have layoffs, and my hope is that we can find a ways, with the governor's help and the legislators' help, to make sure that we don't use a system of deciding who goes that is irrelevant to the kids. The only thing that is relevant is who can do the best job in front of the class, who can teach the teachers (sic) the most. And I know the governor has that in his heart as well."
Still pushing layoffs, still pushing the end to LIFO.
Never mind that John Liu's audits show EXACTLY where Bloomberg can find the money to save the layoffs.
The UFT ought to be all over this audit stuff from Liu.
Why aren't they?
As for the layoff, Cuomo STILL says Bloomberg doesn't need to do layoffs.
Maybe he's seen John Liu's audits too?
I keep harping on this the big money fraud is with the (SCA)School Construction Authority. Please Please get Liu and anyone you can think of to follow that trail. Billions over the Bloomberg years. Has to be many cases of lack of oversight!
ReplyDeleteIf Bloomberg really cared, he'd just pay for the deficit himself. Just cover it for a year. What a great gesture. And I wouldn't even mind if he took credit for it. Can you imagine it? Bloomberg calls a press conference and says, "Hell, everybody, I'll just cover you for a year. Have a drink on me, you deserve it." What a caring and humanitarian thing to do. What a great anecdote in New York City history that would be - the year the mayor took care of everyone.
ReplyDeleteLittle Andy and Soft-Spoken Silver put Moneybags in his place. Putting off 'til next school year teacher LIFO, evaluations and lay-offs. Afterall the unions and pols, excluding moneybags?, can now make nice and divide up the pie. Bloomberg is down for the count. Better now to shoot the little schmuck then let it run wild. Retirement incentives are still on the table.
ReplyDeleteBoy that Andy is a chip off the old block. He is playing the mayor like a virtuoso. He slammed his LIFO Bill which the Post's Fred Dicker states many Republicans had to hold their nose when voting for it. So Bloomy has a big press conference and then,,,,Andy blows him out of the water. Bloomy & Co had to back track and now common ground? This is face saving for the Bloomy as now Cuomo will announce his budget and just like that, he will find 500-600 million to add to the city ed budget. He will state that we cannot afford to loose these great new talented teachers and give Bloomy a way out of his budget bluster. Then Cuomo. Silver and the UFT, will work out the details of the new evaluation system which will be almost identical to the AFT proposal that Weingarten had the AFT delegates approve in Seattle this past July. Arnie Duncan, Cuomo, Bloomy all the power players will hail this as the new way to evaluate and when needed fire teachers. The truth, Bloomy over reached this one. It appears in Wisconsin and New Jersey also, the anti-union, pro business crowd has to re group. But it is wonderful seeing the Bloomster being humiliated publicly. Now such a great year two for the illegal third term Mr B.
