ALBANY - A Brooklyn pol wants to halt Mayor Bloomberg's "out of control" school closure policy, the Daily News has learned.
Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries has introduced legislation to block the city from closing any schools for at least one year. The bill has more than a dozen co-sponsors in the Democrat-controlled Assembly.
"The Department of Education has been on a school closure binge for the last several years without any meaningful evidence that this policy benefits students," Jeffries said.
The year's moratorium, Jeffries said, would give the state Education Department and the Legislature time to study whether the city's policy of closing failing schools was effective.
Jeffries said he drafted the legislation after the city moved in February to close more than 20 schools it deemed were failing.
Jeffries added that he had "a general concern that mayoral control has gotten out of control."
Mayoral control is BEYOND out of control.
That the votes are there to pass this moratorium in the Senate is doubtful.
But it's important to get this passed in the Assembly.
The Mayor of Money is arrogant, autocratic and out of control and he needs to be reined in.
Putting him on the defensive is an important component of that.
