John Liu: Black's Gone, But My DOE Audits Go On

The Mayor of Money hopes hiring Dennis Walcott to replace Cathie Black at the DOE will take some of the scrutiny and criticism off him and his education department.

John Liu says not so:

Liu: Education My Top Target

The firing of Cathie Black won't stop city Comptroller John Liu from scrutinizing her former agency. “The Department of Education was already my No. 1 target, for two reasons,” he said: With a budget of $23 billion a year, it represents the city's biggest expense, and it avoided scrutiny until August 2009, when the state made explicit the fact that the comptroller has the power to review education contracts. Even now, Liu said, contracts come to his office and “we often have to figure out what happened during those six or seven years when the Department of Education was exempt from coming to the comptroller's office.”

Good - keep the audits coming.

  2. Audits, followed by subpoenas, followed by prosecutions.

    We can hope, can't we?
