Why Is This Woman's Salary In The News Story?

A teacher is arrested in Brooklyn for making threats that she would go "Columbine" on her fellow teachers.

The Daily News makes sure that readers know she makes $75,796 a year.

Why is that relevant to the story?

Will this be another one of those incidents where one teacher out of 75,000 is accused of doing something wrong and the Daily News editorial board uses it as proof positive for why all teachers should lose tenure and seniority protections?

I seem to remember NY1 reporter Dominic Carter was a wife beater.

FOX 5 reporter Charles Leaf was a child molester.

But you never hear how all reporters are potential wife beaters and child molesters who need to be watched carefully.

And you never hear how much they make in stories when they're arrested either.

I guess teachers are just different.

They're all suspect, just from the fact that they're teachers, and their salary info is public information because it bolsters Bill Gates' case that teachers make too much money and need to have their salary and benefits cuts.

  1. I too have made terroristic threats: "I'll call your house at 9:30 at night!" "I will call your house at 7 AM!" "I will have your family in for a conference!" "This is required homework! This is your exam review! If it's not done tonight you will get a permanent zero!" You get the idea.....and for those colleagues....there's always the avoidance tactic; it's less stressful and costly than buying a gun and bullets. She couldn't use the ever-disappearing "Teachers' Choice" funding for those items, either. Unfortunately, it appears that the very act of choosing the teaching profession is now regarded as one of those very poor, possibly criminal, life decisions; we are the robber barons of the middle class with those pensions and extravagant benefits and perks. I've been in it for the money from the start....imagine, $100,000 after 30-something years with a master's degree and the 30 additional credits. Where else could you earn such an inflated income?

  3. Yeah...the other day I saw an old checkstub of mine from 2001. I was making all of $38,000, an had been in the porifession for 5 years. At that time, I was finishing up one degree, then beginning a Masters at night, all on my dime. I was DEFINITELY into it for the money...38K living in NYC for a 40 something...?
    Now THAT'S cushy...

  4. I bet thie teacher was set up by two flunkies of the principal. She had been removed before and my guess they had it in for her and she made a dumb remark with no intent of ever doing such. $100,000 bail yep this is a political gift for the Bloomberg tabloids. His poll numbers will stay be stuck in the 30% range. LIFO will stay as the democrats see those poll numbers and know he is a has-been. I cannot wail for the day Bloomberg and his crew leave and scores will be settled with many abusive administrators!

  5. So, what if this teacher was merely joking, or being satirical with these statements? Are we now limited to speaking literally under threat of arrest, whenever we're in a school building? I guess so.
