Notice the similarities?
Lots of non-news, gossip, sensationalized crap and horror stories with accompanying video.
The Daily News has never been a great paper, although there are some great writers who have (or who continue) to work for it.
But now it's starting to look like a supermarket tabloid.
When publisher Mort Zuckerman hired former News of the World editor/hacking criminal Colin Myler to beef up the paper, I wonder if this was what he had in mind.
No wonder the Daily News journalists on the education beat keep doing sensationalized stories about "perv teachers".
They fit right in with stories like these:

Mexican beheadings: Gulf drug cartel members decapitate rival Zetas during HORRIFIC 3 minute video
U.S. student critical after being viciously attacked by chimps, dragged nearly a half mile by his feet at Jane Goodall Institute in South Africa

NYPD grad shows Finest way to propose after Police Academy ceremony
Rookie Anthony Grosso dropped to one knee and surprised girlfriend with ring and flowers
Most of these stories have accompanying video or staged photos (like the last one about the cop and the proposal.)
Why treat the news seriously when you can sensationalize it instead?
Perhaps this move will increase traffic to the News website.
But at what cost?
Perdido, do not forget the post story posting editing that goes on, that takes down any comment and quote that is anti-Bloomberg/DOE, like the story about the principal that got the job at the charter school, after the kid drowned on his watch, and was only fired after he got caught with his pants down, and they could not justify it any more. The original story posted that he was suspended with pay, while his secretary, just charged with "obstruction in protecting her boss" was suspended without pay. Those sentences have now been removed from the story...they will tell you we always edit stories for space, it is naturally a lie.
ReplyDeleteAnd with the turnaround story, it has gotten more comments on Gotham Schools, than I have ever seen...yet today on the NYDN site, NOT ONE COMMENT, not even a place to put a comment. Coincidence? I guess it is possible, but I would not bet on it.
You neglected to mention the world-shattering story about the impending divorce involving Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes!! What's wrong with you, Perdido? Don't you realize how important their lives are as opposed to news items involving struggling middle class teachers who are being bashed and victimized due to their career choice, or poor Alec Baldwin who is also being bashed and victimized as a result of his career choice? Where are your priorities? The Daily News currently reminds me of those tabloids whose headlines I'd read while waiting on the supermarket checkout line: "Monkey grows out of man's shoulder" or "Extraterrestrial spotted in Gracie Mansion", etc.
