That was an amazing performance, as relevant now, perhaps even more so, than it was then. What a talented and versatile actor he was, working until very recently.
It really is chilling, watching him there. Lots of actors play against type (one of my favorites is Fred MacMurray, who really makes a great villain in The Apartment and The Caine Mutiny and great anti-hero in Double Indemnity.) But in A Face In The Crowd, Andy was all-in. I read today that he said later playing the role was tough on his marriage. It was hard playing a sociopath all day long (esp. in a Kazan picture) and not taking home some of the darkness.
