City Unable To Protect Staten Island From Looting

The horror stories post-Sandy continue - this time, the looting of people's homes in Staten Island:

MIDLAND BEACH — While residents are wading through waist-high water to recover what is left of their houses and belongings, they are faced with a new worry — the heartless looting of their devastated homes.

"They took everything," said Margaret Kehoe, 22, who evacuated Monday night and noticed that home had been wiped out. "My TVs, my safety deposit box.

"It's sickening," Kehoe, who has a 2-year-old child and is nine months pregnant. "You see people have nothing, and this is what you do?"

Across the whole borough, there have been nearly 13 arrests for people in connection for looting as of Thursday, according to the Richmond County District Attorneys Office.

“People are looting the neighborhood, taking whatever they can,” said Diana Timofeyeva, 25, who chose staying in her frigid house rather than leave her remaining belongings behind. “It’s better to sleep in the cold than wake up and have nothing left.”

One local, who asked that her name not be used, said the looting started almost immediately after the storm passed.

“We were afraid to leave our belongings as early as Tuesday morning,” she said.

A family whose home was looted last year after Irene tried to ride out Sandy on Staten Island and drowned during the storm.

Now you can see why some people try and stay during a storm.

It's a shame the city can't protect these people from crime.

But they were too busy getting Staten Island ready for the start of tomorrow's (now canceled) NYC Marathon.

And yet, the clueless in the elite corporate media think Bloomberg is doing a great job.

Mike Lupica of the Daily News is the latest media figure to give kudos to Bloomberg - saying the mayor has "done so much right in the run-up to the murderous storm Sandy and in its terrible aftermath."
