Not Such A Great First Day On The Campaign Trail

The NY Post and NY Daily News are hammering Anthony Weiner for hiding from reporters after he sent out his video announcing he was running for mayor.

Here's how the DN characterized Weiner's first day on the trail

Anthony Weiner promised an unconventional mayoral campaign — and on day one, he delivered.
After announcing his candidacy in a video posted online at midnight Wednesday, the disgraced former congressman stayed out of sight, shunning the news conference and five-borough tour that typically launch citywide campaigns.

Instead, Weiner holed up in his Park Avenue South digs, conducting 15-minute phone interviews with reporters and dialing up his Democratic rivals, many of whom greeted his entry into the race with less-than-open arms.

...

Weiner’s unusual campaign launch — too late for TV news programs and most newspaper deadlines — had never been done before by a mayoral candidate. Nor in recent times has a major mayoral hopeful launched a candidacy so late in the campaign — or with so few visible allies. Even Weiner’s onetime political mentor, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), declined to comment.

 Bad press on Day One:

This is not exactly the strategy that is going to make that 15% support Weiner garnered in the Quinnipiac poll increase.
