Only 10% of Democratic voters back Anthony Weiner for mayor — his worst showing since he entered the race, a poll released Thursday shows.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn leads with 25%, followed by Bill Thompson (16%) and Bill de Blasio (14%), the New York Times/Siena College poll found.
Weiner had climbed to first in some polls — before revelations he sexted a woman last summer rocked his campaign 2½ weeks ago.
He's sucking up less and less air from the rest of the candidates, but he is still receiving significant support from some in the black community.
That's something to keep an eye on as we get closer to Primary Day.
The conventional wisdom is that Bill Thompson, the sole black candidate in the race, is having his support in the black community underpolled and will significantly outperform his poll numbers come Primary Day.
But if Weiner is winning support in the black community, he could be taking some votes away from Thompson.
It was thought that Weiner's entrance into the race most hurt de Blasio.
For a while there, that seemed to be true.
But post-sexting scandal 2.0, Weiner may be most hurting Thompson most.
Weiner's support has fallen in all demographic groups except for blacks.
The Thompson campaign was counting on many in the black community to come to him on Primary Day.
We're still a month away, but if these polls are accurate, they're not coming to him yet.
