Cuomo Calls For Merit Pay For Teachers

Apparently Andrew Cuomo hasn't heard that students, parents, teachers and administrators all over New York State are up in arms over his teacher evaluation system that mandates so many extra tests so that teachers and administrators can be rated for the year, because he's doubling down on that issue with a proposal to reward so-called "highly effective" teachers based upon his APPR teacher evaluation system with bonuses.

Few details about the program have been announced, but regardless of how Cuomo and Company put this program together, it comes down to this:


Merit pay based on a mess of an evaluation system that is under attack from all corners for being completely convoluted, unworkable and Kafkaesque.

Good luck getting that proposal up and running, Governor.

  3. Teachers call your congressmen, your senators, the FBI and ask for the Feds to investigate Cuomo under oath regarding Cuomo's Play for Pay casino legislation.

    1. Real estate tax breaks for donations, expanded gambling for donations, education reform agenda for donations - and all the donors are kept secret, at least when CSNY was the recipient. Cuomo is for sale all right. This will come back to bite him. It's one thing to be corrupt, it's another thing to be corrupt while pointing out everybody else around is corrupt.

  5. First off, hardly any teachers are going to be rated highly effective. Second, the few teachers that are going to be rated highly effective probably work in "good" schools and will not be enticed by this blood money to work in a struggling school. Lastly, this merit pay scheme will pit teacher against teacher, not to mention the fact that I could actually see some crooked principals dole out suspect highly effective ratings to teachers in crappy schools just to keep them there. Even worse, just imagine if a principal made a secret deal with a teacher by giving them a highly effective rating with the agreement of getting some kickback from the $20,000. Think it can't happen? Take a look at the front page of the NY Post and Daily News today and see what money and greed with opportunity evil makes.

  6. Are you sure these "bonuses" don't come with strings, such as giving up rights to a pension?

  7. Aren't TFAers immediately rated "highly effective" upon completion of their five week teaching seminar?

    That's the quickest $20K bonus I've ever seen.

  8. Look at how well this is working in Newark--NOT.
    I purposely didn't want to hear his speech, so what did he say about Common Core and testing or does he think parents don't vote?
