Governor Cuomo Not Bothered That Charter School Teachers Are Not Evaluated With His APPR System

While defending the charter school sector today in a less than subtle dig at de Blasio, Governor Cuomo was forced to respond to the loophole that allows charter schools to keep from evaluating their teachers with the governor's teacher evaluation system:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo did his best to weigh in on the decision by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration to cancel “co-location” agreements with three charter schools without exactly weighing in on it in a Friday-morning interview with Susan Arbetter on “The Capital Pressroom.”

...

Arbetter asked if it was fair that educators at charter schools weren’t subject to teacher evaluations that are required of public school teachers.

“Different issue; good question,” he said. ” … I haven’t formed a hard opinion on it, but it is a good question and it is a valid topic.”

Cuomo then launched back into his enthusiasm for the experimentation of the charter school movement, likening it to FDR’s New Deal.
When Arbetter re-posed her evaluation question, the governor said he’d be willing to discuss making charters subject to the process.

How many years after APPR and he hasn't formed a hard opinion on why it's okay for charter teachers to not be evaluated under the same system the rest of NY State's public school teachers are?

Who the hell is he kidding?

He doesn't want them evaluated under the same system because his campaign donors - i.e., the charter school operators and their hedge fundie friends -  don't want that.

Good for Susan Arbetter for putting him on the spot not once but twice over this hypocrisy.

Charter operators get the kid glove treatment from the media, from the politicians, from the business community - and the same goes for their teachers.

Time for that crap to stop.

I'll have more on this later - including Cuomo's likening charters to the New Deal.

Looks like Eva Moskowitz is getting her money's worth out of all the campaign cash she's paying Cuomo.

  1. RBE,

What are the chances NYSED will come to their senses and have a moratorium on APPR and Danielson?

  2. 0%. Cuomo won't allow it. This was one of his first "accomplishments" and he wants to use it for his White House run - how he brought the intransigent teachers union to heal and forced the lazy state bureaucrats to accept a "state of the art" evaluation system.

Hey "Sheriff Andy", donations aside, what's the fear? Put your contributors money where your mouth is. Charters get to hand pick their students (money trees?) and can cancel entire grades if they feel they have to. I thought these were "public schools"? That is what Eva and her ilk say when they have to do something they don't like. Being audited for example. So either they are and should be subjected to the same rules, or they aren't and should start paying market value rent...

    1. The always compare charters to trad public schools, but then, the charters don't have to play by any of the rules. Rank hypocrisy, both from the charter operators and the pols and media shills that support them.
