NYSUT President Magee Strikes Conciliatory Note In First Conversation With Governor Cuomo

Here's your tough-talking new NYSUT president from that tough-talking Revive NYSUT slate that ousted not-so-tough talking Richard Iannuzzi for not talking or acting tough enough in the face of attacks from Governor Cuomo and the state's education reform establishment:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo today called the new president of the state’s teachers union after she was elected to the post over the weekend.

Karen Magee, the Harrison Association of Teachers president, said the Democratic governor called her this morning to congratulate her on the new post.

“He called to congratulate me. I’m looking forward to working with the governor,” Magee told Gannett’s Albany Bureau. “The governor is the head of this state and he’s important to us, but we’re important to him.”

Magee’s election was announced Sunday, and the Buffalo News reported late yesterday that Magee hadn’t been contacted by Cuomo and that the union isn’t expected to endorse him.

Magee said she appreciated the call and didn’t express concerns from members to him about his policies: “I wanted to keep the door open. It was the right phone call at this point in time.”

The union, which represents 600,000 teachers and school employees, didn’t endorse Cuomo in 2010, and it’s become increasingly frustrated with him and the policies in Albany—all of which led the union to oust long-time president Richard Iannuzzi.

This first phone call seems to me the perfect time to tell Sheriff Andy that NYSUT members around the state are disturbed by his anti-union, anti-teacher, anti-traditional public school/pro-charter school policies.

She could have set the tone, let Sheriff Andy know right from the start how pissed off NYSUT members are.

If she wants to keep things on an even keel for the first conversation, then say it nicely - "Thanks for calling to congratulate me, governor, but I must tell you the only reason you're calling me about my election at all is because of how mad NYSUT members are about the direction of education policy in this state..."

But to say this was not the right time to express the concerns her members feel about the Cuomo education polices?

Sounds to me like the tough-talking Revive NYSUT candidate-turned tough-talking NYSUT President is a lot more conciliatory toward Cuomo than the tough-talking Revive NYSUT campaign literature would have had us believe she was going to be.

  1. It is beyond obvious: She is going to be in Cuomo's back pocket. NYSUT is now the puppet attached to Cumom's strings and will do anything and everything he demands. The only hope NYC teachers have is our Mayor who may actually give us a decent contract to spite Cuomo. However, do NOT EXPECT major changes to our evaluation system as it is a state issue and Cuomo is not about to toy with his baby anytime soon. Sorry for goom and doom, but that is how I see it. Hope I am wrong.

    1. I agree, they'll tweak it around CCSS tests and leave everything else in place. And because of what they did in the budget over the CCSS tests, they have to tweak the evals around the tests too, no other way around it. Any individual teacher could sue over the CCSS tests being linked to evaluations but not counting for students and potentially bring the whole APPR system down. So that tweak that's coming has nothing to do with Magee's election, IMO.

  2. Sometimes I think the worst thing about all of this is how stupid they think we are, by offering up such cheap play-acting and expecting us to believe it.

    1. That's right, that;s what I plan to point out over and over with this new leadership. How absolutely full of shit the Revive Jivesters were in their campaign to oust Iannuzzi for supposedly not being "aggressive" enough. On Day One of the Magee Era, we already see more conciliation.

  4. And by the way...I agree with much of what you said!
April 28th at 4 pm at Villa Lombardi's, Holbrook NY there will be a rally and picketing to express our anger and dissatisfaction with Cuomo and other Democrats at the Suffolk County Democratic Committee dinner. Please share with as many people as possible. Thank you.
