Eva Moskowitz Wants 14 More Schools

And so the charter school rent is going to get very, very expensive or NYC:

Success Academy Charter Schools officials said Tuesday they were applying to open 14 more schools in New York City, just months after a high-profile battle with Mayor Bill de Blasio over space in crowded city buildings.

The network run by former City Councilwoman Eva Moskowitz said it wants to grow to meet the demands of thousands of low-income, minority families. The network said more than 14,400 families applied for fewer than 3,000 open seats this year.

Success Academy officials said they would seek approval from the charter authorizer at the State University of New York, which expects to vote on proposals in October.

The announcement drew instant fire from critics who argue charters drain precious resources and motivated families from regular public schools. The Success Academy network has grown rapidly in recent years; in August it will have 32 schools serving 9,000 children.

"It's outrageous," said Noah Gotbaum, vice president of the Community Education Council in District 3. "The mayor has no say, the City Council has no say....It only matters what Eva Moskowitz wants, and she wants to build her empire."

What Eva wants, Eva gets.

You can be pretty sure SUNY will give her all 14 schools.

But here's the interesting thing we should start noting here.

When do other charter operators start to complain about her empire-building.

There's still a charter cap in the state and every time Moskowitz gets a dozen+ new schools, that's fewer that's available for other operators.

Or maybe they figure they'll just get the cap raised in a few years when they reach it and they have decided not to fight Eva and her Empire.

In any case, if Eva gets her 14 new schools, NYC is going to have a lot of rent to pay.

Three schools cost NYC $5.4 million.

  1. I guess mayoral control is only mayoral control when it's exerted by the edu-privateers.

    1. Bet they chop a little more off of it if de Blasio doesn't run things the way they want. Then I bet they return autocratic power when a full-fledged corporatist returns to power.

  2. DeBlasio is only an edu-privateer when it comes to the uft contract. The rest of the time, he's our progressive mayor.
    Right?
    Which hand is he playing?

  3. When u think of it...the charter schools are the best bet for inner city Afr.Americans. Lil Eva gets to use types of discipline in her "public"/"charter"/"private" schools , that public "union" schools will never be allowed to use. In the union schools, a minority of desperados have been allowed to run roughshod , ruining schools and good kids lives forever-yet this disgrace has been going on for decades. Yet...Eva Moskowitz gets to do the obvious...create an orderly environment to learn in. Why? How does she get the authority to do this while union schools cant? Why doesnt the media cover this angle? One or two undercover exposes would blow this dichotomy out of the water...yet nothing is publicised. Union schools cant get rid of horrible drains on their resources, data, and damage ro good students, yet Eva flys under the radar? Why? How? There is no public discussion of this. If a union school or teachers employed some of the drills that Eva puts these kids thrpugh, these teachers would be in the rubbet room, then fired. Its no wonder that Eva

    1. Double standard for Eva, yes, that's for sure. She's savvy and scary, so she gets way with her games. But she's made a lot of enemies over the years so don't be surprised if some former ally/friend/employee doesn't stick a shiv in her one of these days.

  4. ...that Eva has a shot at improved results since shes operating outside the working rules that unipn schools use. So...theres a set ofrulez for one element of society...and another for Eva and her backers. Why isnt the mayhem thats been allowed to destroy many students lives over the last 40 tears in NYC alone been part of public discussion? Why isnt it discussed now? Why does Eva get this stealth protection?

  5. How is it possible that the media doesnt tell the truth on the appalling behavior of the underclass in NYC over the last 40 years? Would you call this media censorship,or propoganda? Why arent Evas harsh disciplinary and exclusionary practices publicised in major media? OR...why arent Evas SUCCESSFUL practices above incorporated into the "union" schools?

    1. Because they want the entire system privatized - it's that simple.

  6. So,..Eva gets everything her way....on the down low...yet they allow union schools and their students to be destroyed by illogical, immoral, and criminal practices. Union schools do not enforce the NYC Discipline code...on the whole. Get the shit out of the union schools,,,and they could do much better. Yet only Eva can do so...and she dumps her shit into union schools to boot...sorry...but this is the truth. How and why this all has been covered up is the crime of the century.

    1. To be fair, Catholic schools do it too. I know - I went to one. Started with 279 students in 9th grade. Graduated with 206 in 12th. Some left on their own accord. Some were told they were out.

  7. The problem with a full charter take over is eventually they won't have any public schools left to dump the kids into. So eventually charters will be exactly the same as public schools. Unless they keep a few prisons..., I mean, schools open to warehouse the bad kids.

  8. A scam, within a scam, within a scam...all the while the working taxpayers are getting shafted by both the top and the "bottom" of society. And the poor kids who have been critically victimized by this societal enabling of hooliganism, and much worse, have been hurt the most. It almost seems like this is, and has been the master plan all along...perish the thought.

  9. Yes, anonymous 3:29pm that is exactly the plan. Destroy the middle class, it's all on our backs, taken by the top or given to the bottom.
The nation of lies. And we allow it to continue.

  10. Yup....they're going to be forced into keeping a certain amount of public schools open, especially for, kids with IEPs. AND they will need to scapegoat union teachers for, quite some time.

  11. Charters perform a service for a certain segment of the population. Parents who don't want their kids with disruptive ones. Public schools used to do this service for them - by homogenous grouping. Their options are some of the specialty public schools. By going charter they feel they get a safe environment - unless their own kids mess up and find themselves sitting in a closet - or hanging by their thumbs from a rack.

  12. Spoke to,someone the other day, who related that his niece went to work at a charter school, maybe Countess Eva's, who was appalled at the things they did to the poor little kiddies. The niece ended up resigning after,a,year. The Countess , apparently gets every last ounce out of her labor, considering the 40% turnover rate.
