NYSUT President Magee: We Could Support Chris Gibson For Governor

From a NY Times profile of Representative Chris Gibson (R):

Mr. Gibson has shown himself to be a wild card on state matters, too: As a vocal critic of Common Core education standards, the third-term lawmaker has taken issue with Mr. Cuomo’s recent attacks on teachers’ unions, a traditionally Democratic-leaning constituency. “Teachers are not the problem,” Mr. Gibson said.

Karen E. Magee, president of the New York State United Teachers, which has supported Mr. Gibson in the past, said he would have a “good chance” of winning the influential labor group’s backing for governor, if it were deciding on an endorsement today.

“He values and respects teachers and the work we do, and I would not say that that’s anywhere aligned with the current governor of the State of New York,” Ms. Magee said.

Until the teachers unions stop acting as functionaries of the Democratic Party and actually stick it to Dem politicians when they stick it to labor, the neo-liberal Dems controlling the party are going to continue to look for labor money/support then sell us out right after the election.

If only the unions had played coy before the 2014 election and, you know, not ensured the Working Families Party endorsed Cuomo over Zephyr Teachout or helped Kathy Hochul beat Teachout's running mate Tim Wu, maybe people would take them seriously when they make noise about not supporting Dems next time around.

As it stands now, I certainly don't take them seriously.

  1. I couldn't agree more. The time to endorse, the time to fight, was when Andrew Cuomo was running. Magee headed a ticket that explicity promised to endorse Cuomo and miserably failed to do so. Her credibility and motivation, along with every member of the Revive slate, is well beyond questionable.

    1. You could go back and revisit the Revive campaign literature and your own in a post and see just how much of what they promised went south.

Revive NYSUT ought to be named Vivisection NYSUT for what they've done to teachers.

  2. Yeah. It's all empty at this point. And desperate. And evidence that there are few if any plays left for her to make....or that she's willing to make. We need to talk about reclaiming NYSUT or starting anew. Really. Whichever is more doable.

    1. Empty rhetoric sprinkled liberally onto the barren soil...

  3. More backyard speculation on securing the barn door after the horse has run off. I guess these kinds of statements are what we can expect from the feckless eunuchs of NYSUT from now until they all come up for election again. Gotta say something Right Andy? Right Marty? Right Karen? This crew should write an appendix for that Broad Academy book on how to close schools. Their strategerizing on wrecking public ed is more successful than anything the Broadies have dreamed up.

    1. Ed reform wouldn't be anywhere near as successful at "disrupting" the system were there not complicity from the union leaders - especially Weingarten and her Unity crew.
