Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch Will Not Seek Re-Election To Board Of Regents

Nick Reisman at State of Politics:

Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch on Monday said she would step down from her post when it ends in March.
Tisch made the surprise announcement in Albany this morning at the board’s monthly meeting.
She was first elected chancellor in 2009 and had served on the Regents board since 1996.

Keshia Clukey at Politico NY reports Tisch said she will spend the rest of her tenure trying to "calm the waters".

Given how polarizing Tisch has been, this statement is laughable.

In any case, your thought on Tisch's exit?

  2. Yeah,
Here in NY these step downs NEVER lead to a better replacement. In general, things get worse.

Ex. King replaced by Elia....Elia won't have a "Poughkeepsie Moment." As bad has she is turning out to be, she will probably run a tighter ship than King...so just as awful but a tad tighter.

Same here. There will be a deep reform-minded replacement that will be a better communicator, etc.

Nothing will change at best, things will get worst at worst.

My money is on the latter.

  3. They'll get a ReformBot that had a cup of coffee in a public school classroom, and then announce that an "educator" is chairing the Regents.

More lies and misdirection is the only guarantee...

    1. Hey, maybe Kingsie wants to come back?

Oh, wait, he got another gig, didn't he?

      How bout Steiner?

He's eligible, especially since he avoided jail.

Yes, it will be someone horrible who talks collaboration and listening and does whatever the hell he/she wants.

      Kinda like MaryEllen Elia.

  4. one by one they are all falling by the wayside. The announcement by Ms. Tisch that she is leaving signals that indeed the educational pundits in New York are corrupt. The move by Ms. Tisch is seen by me as a way of escaping the corrupt system in new york education. I believe deep down Meryl Tisch is a good woman who has been poisoned by the fake reformers, charter school bozos. the white house and arnie duncan - who by the way has left as well......Ms. Tisch is married to the NY football Giants and does not need the bull shit coming from all the pundits our there. Why deal with the bull shit if your husband is a rich man?? Many people have tried to "reform" education with no experience regarding education what so ever. The thing is that all these people are finding out that our educational system has never been broken and that all this made up stuff ..i.e. failing schools is a crock of bull shit and the real problem with our society is poverty. Good luck Ms. Tisch I will cya at the next Giants home game.....

    1. A good part of the Tisch family's fortune was based on their majority ownership of the Lorillard Corporation, a tobacco and cigarette company that they owned from 1960 until 2008. In other words, during the height of the era when the cigarette companies were stonewalling public health efforts to connect smoking to heart and respiratory diseases, and doing their best to addict successive generations of young people.

That part of the family's karma pre-dates the assaults on teachers and public schools she facilitated.

Yeah, real nice family, and real nice lady.

    2. The Tisch family is scum - I used to smoke their cigarettes, which I got hooked on, true story, after I got "complimentary packs" at the beach when I was 14. Smoked them for years before I finally quit.

Not enough bad shit can happen to the Tisch family - and that includes Merryl. Horrible human beings.

  5. Who appoints the Chancellor? If it's Cuomo, then I'm sure the next one will be just as useless.

    1. Used to be Shelly Silver - that's why Tisch was there so long. Now it will be Heastie.

  7. Oh yeah. Moskowitz could be appointed. But, she would never take the job. She makes $500k/yr. I'm sure Regents Chancellor makes about had that.

  8. Meryl Tisch was the crony appointment of the indicted Sheldon Silver. As such, she was incompetent and an obnoxious hag.

    1. Sheldon Silver was her matchmaker, her Rabbi and her mentor. The bad apple fell under the canopy of the decadent tree.

    2. Yes, not a surprise that Tisch is going now that Silver's not in power anymore.
