Cuomo Finds Time To Make Yogurt Official State Snack, Can't Sign Teacher Safety Bill Into Law

 From State of Politics:

It’s official: Yogurt is the state snack.

As the Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday signed into law a measure that designates yogurt the snack of New York state.

The legislation’s approval comes as the third annual “yogurt summit” (yes, it’s annual now) kicks off at Cornell University in Ithaca.

Meanwhile the so-called teacher safety bill that provides a safety net for teachers who have their evaluations partly based upon Common Core tests that don't count for their students but do count against teachers languishes on his desk unsigned.

ALBANY—A month into the school year, districts are unsure how to proceed with the state-mandated teacher evaluation system because Governor Andrew Cuomo has not yet signed his own bill amending it.
After negotiating with teachers’ unions, Cuomo introduced and lawmakers passed a bill last session that aims to shield teachers from the rough rollout of the Common Core standards. The bill would create what state officials call a “safety net” for educators whose evaluations were negatively affected by students’ low scores on early administrations of new, more difficult Common Core-aligned state exams.
But because Cuomo has not yet signed the bill, it isn't clear whether educators who were rated “ineffective” or “developing”—the two lowest scores—will be affected by the “safety net” proposal.
“It’s confusing, because schools don’t know which set of rules they’re operating under and don’t know whether a teacher is going to be classified as ‘ineffective’ or ‘developing’ until those recalculated scores are made available,” said David Albert, spokesman for the New York State School Boards Association.

The governor's priorities here are quite clear.

He doesn't care about teachers at all.

Yogurt?

That he likes.

Teachers With Stockholm Syndrome

Nothing to say here other than this unnamed teacher is one of the dumbest people on the planet.

Lhota says there's money for tax cuts for rich people.

But those years you teachers went without a contract because Boomberg refused to negotiate fairly?

Nope - no money for that.

Golly gee, Mr. Lhotta, thanks for your honesty!

Bet this teacher voted for Bloomberg three times running too.

NYCDOE's Marge Feinberg: We Can't Afford To Remove PCB's From Schools Because We Spent The Money On Smartboards

Oh, yes - that's what she said:

A South Bronx charter school founded by a former city councilwoman replaced its city-issued toxic lighting fixtures by itself — rather than waiting for a Department of Education retrofit for the public schools in the same building this summer, the Daily News has learned.

The Bronx Success Academy, founded by Eva Moskowitz, spent its own money to replace the lights — which are leaking with cancer-causing chemicals — while two other schools in the same Morris Ave. building have to wait.

“I think it’s terrible,” Dean Gross, a science teacher at M.S. 203, which shares space with the charter school, Bronx Academy of Letters and P.S. 168.

Gross said he’s forced to teach students in a windowless classroom with a poor ventilation system and no air conditioner — and lighting fixtures that leak polychlorinated biphenyls, which are linked to cancer, reproductive and neurological problems, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Our kids in the building have so many issues to begin with,” Gross added. “We’re the number one asthma district in the country. This does not help. The teachers are dragging. They’ve got headaches and stomach pains.”

Union health and safety officials are to meet with the city Tuesday to discuss how Success Charter Network removed the tainted lighting fixtures.

The Bronx Academy of Letters, one of four schools in the building, had its lights replaced last summer as part of a classroom redesign, according to the city.

Marge Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, said the building’s remaining tainted lights would be switched out this summer. Feinberg added the city spent more than $1.7 million upgrading the three public schools.

“The funding was spent on Smartboards, bathroom upgrades, laptop carts, drinking fountains, reconfiguring classroom space for Bronx Academy of Letters, and new classroom doors,” Feinberg said.

I'm going to leave aside the issue of unequal treatment between the Eva charter and the public schools in the same building for now.

Let's just focus on what NYCDOE spokesperson Marge Feinberg said about this PCB mess.

Let me repeat what she said here:

"We couldn't get the cancer-causing PCB's out of these schools, the ones dripping on people's heads and making them sick, because we spent all the money on Smartboards and laptop carts.  But don't worry - we'll get those PCB's removed this summer as soon as the new budget money kicks in!"

Marge Feinberg - quite literally one of the worst people in the world.

Can you imagine the lack of morality, empathy and humanity it takes to say the stupid crap she says?

Headline Of The Day

From a story in the NY Times:

Drugs Help Tailor Alcoholism Treatment

Oh goodie - people susceptible to substance abuse will be given substances to stem their susceptibility to substance abuse.

That should work swell.

We live in a culture that looks for the easy way out of things.

We also live in a culture that is looking for a way to cash in on everything.

Personal transformation and spiritual, emotional and physical recovery from addiction?

Nah, that's too hard.

Here's a pill for your abuse problem.

If that doesn't work, we'll give you another pill.

Then another.

Just keeping drugging until your cravings for a drink go away.

And keep paying for those drugs while you're at it.

Soon you'll be all better!

So long as you continue to pay for and take our drugs, of course...
