Why Is Bloomberg Praising Mulgrew?

Seriously, this is troubling, though given the history of the UFT lately, not unexpected:

Bloomberg heaped praise on UFT President Mike Mulgrew, whose union is under fire from charter school advocates who believe it blocked efforts to raise the cap in Albany in advance of the state’s “Race to the Top” application (which failed).

The mayor called Mulgrew “just spectacular” and “tough as nails,” but also someone who “understands we have to move forward.”

Any idea why Bloomberg is publicly praising Mulgrew?

  1. I bet they have a done deal for the next contract. MM. will give out more teachers' rights.

  2. Yes, I posted my hunch on this one last week several times. The Dictator doesn't have the word "No" in his lexicon, so the though of losing all of those newbie teachers, and his overall plan significantly cut back is akin to him drinking a pot of acid.

We'll wake up one moring, VERY soon with an "offer" on our plate. It'll be another "this is the best we can do" ploy by the UFT, meaning "you better sign it or else".

It will be framed as a glorious compromise, witha a buyout of the dinsoaurs, which actually WILL be a victory for them if they want to go. The rank and file will get some kind of raise, which will be a "win" for Mulgrew, because of the recession. BUT, Bloomberg will somehow get a backdoor suspension or revocation of seniority rights with principals having some say as to layoffs, with some vets being laid off. Will you vote "Yes" for this?

  3. The fix is in? The deal will be 6% over 2 years they will split their differences Bloomberg offered 2% the pattern is 4%.There will be a buy out and they will have an agreement on the ATR's similar to the District 75 agreement of 2007.

  4. What is the District 75 agreement of 2007? My understanding there was a District 78 agreement, which deals with all the teachers in Alternative high schools. I surely don't remember the District 75 agreement of 2007.

  5. Wrong # pardon the slip my age is showing. Result was impact bargaining, the DOE had to accept 50% in new schools from those from the Special Ed Dist schools being phased out or closed.. My guess the other 50% will be given some timethen offered a buy-out.
