Union Announces School Bus Strike For Wednesday

From the NY Times:

New York City’s school bus drivers will go on strike on Wednesday, the head of their union said Monday afternoon.

“While we remain optimistic that we can reach an agreement,” said Michael Cordiello, president of Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, the strike is to begin on Wednesday morning.

“This is not a decision we’ve arrived at lightly, but an action we must take,” Mr. Cordiello said.

A strike would require as many as 152,000 city public and private school students to find another way to get to school. The city has said it would provide parents and students with MetroCards and reimburse cab fare for those without access to public transportation.

...
A strike would be the first by the city’s school bus drivers since 1979, when they walked out for 13 weeks.

It will be interesting to see how the strike, if it happens, will affect the evaluation agreement negotiations.

A nightmare week - a bus strike and APPR armageddon.

  1. We need to connect the dots between the DOE view of seniority of its bus drivers and teachers. Old is bad, new is good; unless you are a politician. While the DOE originally believed the EPP (extending job protection for senior bus drivers) promoted student safety it also believed, prior to the Bloomberg administration, that experienced teachers were preferable to less experienced. Then the war started. All of sudden less expensive was more important than experience. The land of Bloomberg all of these jobs can be outsourced....outsourced to the least expensive.

    1. You're absolutely right, Jeff. In every sector of the economy, they shed experienced (and older) workers for cheaper (and often younger) workers.

Remember that movies Logan's Run in the 70's? Sci-fi movie where they kill people when they hit 30?

We have a similar movement going on now, only it's about making anybody with any time or experience in a job redundant and replacing them with somebody cheaper.

Exactly, the city has been going after the veteran, expensive workers, particularly the teachers.
    The Sandmen are after you.

Notice how the UFT's Michael Mulgrew is silent on the strike.

  3. I agree with everything that has been said about the attempt to get rid of workers with seniority. All of a sudden, Bloomberg is worried about the money the City is spending on this contract? Too bad he wasn't worried about the ones for the 911 and CityTime.

  4. It is a wake-up call about how important the school bus drivers are to the safety of our children. Nobody wants their kids to face alternative transportation. There has to be a happy medium.
