The Right Wing Smear Campaign Against Bill De Blasio

They're smearing him as an "ACORN project," calling him "Sandanista Bill" for doing humanitarian work in Nicaragua in his youth, and comparing him to Raul Castro in the newspapers.

Will this kind of right wing smear campaign work in NYC?

It would work elsewhere in the country, of course, where corporatist president Barack Obama has been called a "socialist" by idiots like Sarah Palin and many on the right believe that as truth.

Still, NYC is not the rest of America, so while it might work in the rest of the country, I wonder how effective it will be here.

What do you think out there?

  1. It worked when UFT used it against Kit Wainer 6 years ago. Of course, Kit wasn't sitting on that 43 point lead, and NYC does not allow ex-residents to vote.

    1. That's right - it did work against Kit. I should do a post on how the GOP and the UFT love their red-baiting strategies, shouldn't I? Both parties have been using them for a long, long time...

  2. I can only imagine it helping him at this point.

    1. We'll see how many people remember the word "Sandanista" - either as the ruling junta in Nicaragua or The Clash album from 1980.

  3. I hope people will realize that Lhota and Carrion are desperate and also hope that the word, "Socialist" does not scare NYers the way it does the rest of the country. Makes me like DeBlasio better actually, illustrates that his Progressive credentials are more longstanding and sincere than I had previously thought.

    1. Same goes for me. We'll have to see how the rest of NYC feels. The 80s were a long time ago, but if Bloomberg could try and tie Green to Stalin in 2001, surely Lhota can try and tie BdB to Castro and Nicaragua.
