NYSED Commissioner King Makes First Common Core Meeting By "Invitation-Only"

From WNYT:

Town hall education forums, canceled due to disruptions, will be rescheduled.

After the first in a series of public meetings scheduled to discuss the controversial common core curriculum became unruly in Poughkeepsie last week, Education Commissioner John King called off the remaining forums in the state.

According to the state Education Department, new events will be scheduled around the state but in a different format. One will be a small, invitation-only session, but the spokesman confirmed there will be other regional meetings that are open to the public.

The spokesman says the commissioner hopes to iron out the details within the week.

If I were trying to erase the bad publicity and bad feelings over the Poughkeepsie Common Core town hall debacle, I wouldn't start the newly-announced Common Core meetings off with one that is by invitation-only, nor would I schedule it at 4-6 PM when many parents are still working and thus unable to attend the event even if they get the invite.

Quite frankly, the NYSED and Regents look like they're going to compound the Poughkeepsie mess by trying to overcontrol the newly announced 12 Common Core forums and make sure nothing comes out of these things that isn't Regents-and NYSED-friendly.

  1. Let the votes of parents speak for them if the commissioner and regents won't let them speak: vote out all incumbents including his majesty Andy. Maybe that will help them listen.

    1. That's exactly what will have to happen. Silver is pals with Tisch. She is going nowhere. But if Shelly is made to see the error of his ways - or the majority of his caucus is - then maybe we'll have something there.

  2. They are setting this up like Education Nation. I hope there will be parent protestors outside each and every meeting. And yes, they are a special interest group. Their main interest is and will always be their kids!! People have to start putting the pressure on Cuomo!!

    1. They are doing exactly that - Tisch/King Education Nation.

But that will backfire on them if that is their intent. Parents with kids in the system will not be fooled by that kind of show.
