Looks Like Cuomo Is Paying Attention To The Parent Uprising

Leonie Haimson asks:

Gail Richmond responds, yes, it was Cuomo.

Leonie asks if the poll was specifically about education and the reply from Gail Richmond is yes.

I've been saying for a while now that Sheriff Andy must be viewing the parent uprising over his ed deform agenda with increasing alarm.

He needs to run up the score next year and win re-election by a large margin to be taken seriously for a 2016 presidential run (especially as his neighboring governor, Chris Christie, won his re-election by 22.5% last week.)

If Cuomo ekes out a small victory in 2014, hurt by the parent and educator uprising over APPR, Common Core, and inBloom, he goes into 2016 with a weakened hand and his dream of sleeping in the White House for four years takes a big hit.

So you bet Sheriff Andy is paying attention to Poughkeepsie and East Setauket and anywhere else parents are protesting the SED/Regents/Cuomo reform agenda.

With the Gates Foundation-funded state PTA calling for a Common Core slowdown and criticizing the SED rollout of the Core and now Sheriff Andy polling to see what people think about his ed reform policies, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see a major shift in tone on education policy from Sheriff Andy.

Cuomo's on the take from the hedge fund managers/education reformers who are funding this education deform movement, but even that largesse won't keep him from doing the politically expedient thing.

As it becomes clearer and clearer that the SED/Regents reform agenda is untenable the way it is right now, Cuomo will distance himself more and more from it and may even call for a slowdown of the implementation of Common Core himself.

We'll see - I'm reading some tea leaves here, and that kind of thing always leaves you open to misreading things and making a big mistake.

But as this parent revolt over the SED/Regents/Cuomo reform agenda spreads, the political observer in me tells me that Cuomo, up for re-election next year and looking to be elected president in 2016, is going to want to get on the popular side of this fight.
