Time For Dennis Walcott To Just Go The ---- Away

Dennis Walcott shares the results of his latest physical for all New Yorkers to rejoice in:

Smart government policies to improve longevity and health outcomes for the public are critical. But it is ultimately our own individual responsibility to chart a healthier course for ourselves. You don’t need to run marathons. A modest change in diet and exercise habits can go a long way.

My annual physical checkup — I just got the results — yielded the following comparisons to last year’s findings: Weight down from 152 to 148 lbs.; HDL (“good cholesterol”) up from 80 to 103; LDL (“bad cholesterol”) down from 82 to 73; blood pressure from 122/70 to 120/68; resting heart rate from 59 to 46 beats per minute.

I am here today as a result of the change in diet and exercise and a determination to confront the diseases that devastated families like mine. It’s a small price to pay to experience the joy of holding your grandchildren someday.

That's great, Dennis - you're an awesome physical specimen.

But you're also a de-humanized functionary of the oligarchy who has spent years doing the work of privatizing the public school system.

Few people have done more to damage children in the past ten years in this city than you.

Better to be a little less of an awesome physical specimen and a little more of a whole human being.

Go away, Dennis.

No one gives a shit about your latest physical results, your cholesterol levels or your body fat measures.

  3. Walcott should be sued for what he did to millions of childrens' educations. Not TEACHERS. There should be a lawsuit against HIM, not Tenure. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!

  4. There's a name for people like him but it's not PC so I won't post it

    1. Yeah, I know where you're going with that. I think there's an argument to be made that Mr. Walcott was selling some people down the river by carrying out Bloomberg's policies. And if that's not "PC" - well, it's also the truth. And sometimes the truth isn't "PC".

  5. Mr Walcott is an enemy of public schools and public school children, the democratic principles that this nation were founded on, and of the United States. He has sold his soul.

Mr Walcott should be held accountable and be punished severely for the crimes that he has perpetuated against our citizenry and institutions.

  6. The venom here is misplaced. I think Wolcott is responsible for a lot of harm during his time working for Michael Bloomberg in City Hall.

But I think this piece is meant to personalize the problems that many people of color, particularly black men, have with diet, heart disease, blood pressure and diabetes. I don't think he's boasting. I'm sure he's using the Urban League mindset that example makes the best case and that he's telling the terrible story of his family's health history and his determination to beat it as a public service sort of thing.

Hate the man for what he did as a political hack and schools chancellor but try to understand what he did with this article as a black man reaching out to his own community.

There is too much hate in the education world right now and though I'm not surprised at the feelings Wolcott engenders with this post by virtue of his public role I'm very surprised by the energy, language and personal calumny triggered by this rather innocent exercise in public health advocacy.

Everybody please take one deep breath.

    1. Walcott engenders venom because of his record as chancellor and deputy mayor.

That record cannot, and will not, be forgotten just so that Walcott can "model" nutrition and good health habits.

There are plenty of other models in the black community for nutrition and good health habits who didn't spend the last decade privatizing the school system, pushing for changes in law so that he could fire teachers of color, and helping build a charter school system that treats children of color like prisoners in jail.

There is nothing innocent about anything Walcott does - not even this DN piece.

  7. Lack of a soul is very detrimental to one's health. It can strike you @ any time and incapacitate you like the widow maker herself. Take a sip of holy water ever night.
