APPR Teacher Evaluation Open Thread

The NYCDOE is supposed to send out final evaluation ratings for educators sometimes between 4 PM and 12 AM.

Anybody get theirs yet?

If so, thoughts?

If not yet, thoughts anyway?

  1. Interesting to see what teachers get, and how the state came to those numbers. Danielson ratings + MOSL + State Regents + comparing to peer schools = WTH?

I still feel NYSED doesn't know what they're doing. Everything is new, complex, and convoluted...

But, that's what you get with junk science.

    1. NYSED definitely does not know what they're doing, which is why it took them 10+ months to finally get the 2012-2013 district-by-district ratings released!

      Wonder why the delay?

They didn't even bother with excuses.

  3. Nothing yet, but I am not going to worry about it. The only thing I cared about was the observation portion of my evaluation, and since that went fine ill take whatever VAM/MOSL scores I get with a grain of salt. I am pretty optimistic that they will just come up effective for 95% of teachers in the city since it is meaningless junk science.

  4. not only is it menaingless junk science, since most teachers made decisions to leave or return to their school based on the evaluation, the DOE could be sued for fraud and misrepresentation if a teachers evaluation changes due to VAM. They had an ethical and legal obligation to deliver the final evaluation in June prior to the end of the school year.

  5. Quite a few developing teachers in my school. Even though we had a double-digit increase in English Regents scores (our state measure), we only scored 15 of 20 points in that component. And NYSED is talking about state measures going to 40%? I have to tell you that I'm pretty fucking livid about this.

  6. Just got my official rating in my DOE email. ("Effective") Funny thing is that I don't even care one way or the other.

  7. Only if you are "in the loop" will you get a highly effective. It is no secret that ineffective teachers who cater to the principal and her cronies are highly rated (nearing 60 pts). I had to see it to believe it.

  8. Anon...LIVID is an understatement!

  9. I was super happy with my rating because my principal rated me developing but ironically my test scores were so high (being that they jacked with the tests this year to make everyone think the CCLS were working) that I ended up with an overall effective. I got only 42 points for the principal evaluation portion and then 17 + 17 to give me an overall 77 effective.

  10. Mmm, yummy junk science. I just got my Advance scores! I teach art to autistic kids in D75, and based on NYSAA scores of kids I don't teach, in subject areas I don't teach, I just went from Highly Effective to Effective: 55 + 17 + 16 = 88. Many of my colleagues are in the same boat. (Of course, if I had been rated Ineffective or Developing, those same test scores would have knocked me up a level, so I guess should should just be in awe.) You just can't make this stuff up.

  11. Mine came up effective in all measures as I suspected. Totally meaningless.

  12. Oh fucking please. I know I am a well respected, hard working, caring and passionate teacher. All this means to me is that I now have two years job security. What an absolute waste of energy. Let me do what I have to do and just get the Fuck out of my way with this meaningless shit!

  13. Music teacher here. Rocked with my kids who I enjoy so much! 57 out of 60 on MOTP. Unfortunately, I do not teach a "regents" subject and was linked to Social Studies where in high school, we all know that the Global Regents is the hardest. In this case I received just a 15 on the state. Local was 16. Again, meaningless numbers since I don't know the kids anyway. Brought me down from HIghly Effective to Effective. Whatever. Just proof that we're all screwed in some way.
