State Senator Marty Golden Under Investigation For Corruption

Nothing like having this kind of story out a few weeks before Election Day:

US Attorney Preet Bharara is investigating the campaign finances of Brooklyn state Sen. Martin Golden, The Post has learned.

Golden has hired Gottlieb & Gordon, a law firm that specializes in government investigations and white-collar crime defenses, in response to a subpoena from the Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office.

“The campaign fund is being looked at,” acknowledged Golden, Brooklyn’s only elected Republican official.

But he said he didn’t know why his campaign fund was being targeted.

Before it was disbanded, Gov. Cuomo’s anti-corruption Moreland Commission was probing suspicious campaign spending by legislators and was reportedly looking into $541,599 that Golden sent over the past decade to the Bay Ridge Manor, a catering hall he sold to his brother following his 2002 Senate election.

I'm sure the nearly $550,000 in campaign funds Golden gave to his brother for "catering" over the last ten years was on the up-and-up.

Tom Robbins covered some of this ground in 2008 in the Village Voice.

Having Robbins do a story on you is one thing.

Having Preet Bharara pick up the investigation from the defunct Moreland Commission is something else.

  1. As a Bay Ridge resident, I am quite proud that both our congressman, and our state senator will get reelected (possibly in a landslide) then BOTH end up in jail within 6 months...
