Mulgrew, UFT Tell Lawmakers It's Okay To Vote For Cuomo Reform Budget

Ken Lovett in the Daily News:

ALBANY — State lawmakers raced to finish work on New York’s budget Tuesday amid simmering resentment over Gov. Cuomo’s education reforms - which opened up an unusual rift between the city and state teachers’ unions.

...

City teacher union president Michael Mulgrew angered NYSUT President Karen Magee and her team after he put out a statement Sunday night - before the education bill was even in print- claiming victory in beating back some of Cuomo's more strident proposals, sources said.

While Magee urged lawmakers to reject the education measures, city lawmakers said they were told by Mulgrew's team that voting for the package would not be held against them.

"They just weren't on the same page," said one legislator of the two unions. "The issue between them was whether to strike the best deal they could or whether to oppose it outright."

That'll keep them from voting for the odious budget, Mikey.

  1. Why don't NYC teachers do whatever it takes to rid themselves of Mulgrew? The guy sells all of us out every chance he gets.

  2. ” If you were fortunate enough right now to be standing over George Orwell’s grave in the sweet garden of the churchyard at Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, you would hear, piercing the roar of his revolving corpse, a plaintive, despairing voice crying out: “Bury me deeper. Now. Please.”

Nothing will happen until the k-8 teachers start to vote against UNITY/UFT hacks and shills, Mike Mulgrew and Randi Weingarten. Only then. 40% HS teachers voted against Unity in the last election, while almost 90% of all others (explain to me why retirees get to vote, other than without them Mulgrew would crap himself) vote Unity. I would love to hear one of them, not a Unity hack, Unity delegate or one who has those cushy double pension jobs, explain, just why those K-8 teachers aren't angry as hell, and why despite of the actual evidence, they continually vote for Mulgarten?

  5. My theory on why so many K-8 teachers vote Unity is simple (and will probably be very unpopular)- it's ignorance and fear. Our chapter leader is, very seriously, one of the most sycophantic individuals I have ever met. He is so far up administration's ass that he can give a rectal exam. He is directed by admin as to which information he can share with us. He never has a chapter meeting. He has witnessed line of duty injuries, and not filled out witness statements because he was directed not to. He says nothing when meetings run late. Because he so frequently bends to administration's whims, the rest of the staff is afraid not to do the same.

When the contract vote came up last spring, he briefly addressed us, told us "this is the best we can hope for" and "we would go to the bottom of the negotiation list" and he strongly recommended that we vote for it. He wouldn't allow the 3 or 4 people who knew better to address the group.

High school chapter leaders are, in my experience, more savvy, less fearful, and are less likely to be Unity shills. The K-8 chapter leaders are exactly the opposite. If they're all like my CL, is it any wonder that Mulgrew keeps getting elected?

    1. Don't just blame k-8 teachers. There are 19000 high school teachers - in the last election 1450 voted MORE, 1575 Unity and about 400 New Action. Add the numbers and see how many high school teachers didn't vote. Even if K-8 voted for the opposition all the opposition could win would be 23 seats on the ex bd out of 100. Elections are rigged. Time to boycott an election no one can win other than Unity. So don't get your hopes up.
