Chancellor Farina Claims Almost A "Celebratory Attitude" Around Renewal Schools

Eliza Shapiro at Politico NY, writing about a joint appearance between NYSED Commissioner MaryEllen Elia and NYCDOE Chancellor Carmen Farina on school "turnaround" efforts

FariƱa has also made Renewal schools a priority, and has said she is seeing improvement in many of them.

"There has almost been a celebratory attitude around Renewal schools," she said.

Huh?

Almost a "celebratory attitude"?

This is just anecdotal, but what I have heard from teachers at Renewal schools both here on the blog and in communication elsewhere is that the pressure and stress at these schools has reached toxic levels.

From what I am hearing the only people with the "celebratory attitude" are the charter operators who stand to benefit from the receivership law when Renewal schools get turned over to them.

Are you hearing anything different?

If so, I'd like to correct the record and help "celebrate" receivership too.

  1. Sure, Farina and Elia are celebrating: it's the preliminaries for Round Two of mass public school closings and teacher displacement, except this time it will be state-wide and not primarily limited to NYC.

And rest assured that our faux Tough Guy President will stand next to Farina, tell us how great we have it, and boast of the union's collaboration with these social vandals.

  2. Let us never forget that Farina is the same PR genius who stood up on a day in February when it was 10 degrees below zero with a foot of snow on the ground and refused to close the schools saying "it's a beautiful day."

Unfortunately, our mayor 1.) was hoodwinked into thinking La Farina was the best person for the job because he'd met her once or twice, 2.) thought she was the best person for the job because he shares her benighted "education philosophy" or 3.) couldn't get anyone else to do the job.

  3. RBE,
Do you know that renewal principals receive more money? The DOE is paying renewal principals almost 20% more.

  4. New levels of absurdity. I work in a renewal school and morale could not be lower and dysfunction could not be higher(wait the DOE is involved, scratch the last one) My damaged sense of humor is the ONLY thing that will get me to June and the open market. Extremely sad for the kids.
