Message To John Kasich: They Took Our Teachers Lounge

TPM:

Ohio Governor John Kasich said at an education summit in New Hampshire that many teachers believe that "we’re out to take their job" when schools evaluate teacher performance and that teachers' lounges provide an environment where this worry spreads.

"No we’re not out to take their job. If you need help, we’ll help you. If you’re a terrible teacher, then you should be doing something else because you’re going to find more satisfaction doing something else that you’re good at," he said. "We have to constantly communicate that."

He then suggested that teachers' unions contribute to educators' worries.

"I’ll tell you what the unions do, unfortunately too much of the time. There’s a constant negative comment, ‘They’re going to take your benefits, they’re going to take your pay,'" Kasich said. "So if I were, not president, but if I were king in America, I would abolish all teachers' lounges, where they sit together and worry about, 'Woe is us.'"

In my school we have no teachers lounge.

There used to be a teachers cafeteria, but that got taken and made into classroom space.

Individual departments sometimes have their own spaces, but those have been cut down or completely eliminated in recent years as well because space is at a premium.

Teachers share classrooms as well.

There isn't much private space for commiserating where I work, that's for sure.

Frankly, I don't want the private space to complain about things - I'd like it so I could get some work done (i.e., grade papers, plan those wonderful Common Core-aligned lesson plans, etc.)

Alas, it is sometimes difficult to get that where I am.

So I dunno what the hell Kasich is talking about, but I can assure him that we're not all sitting around in teachers lounges complaining about teacher evaluations tied to test scores and the like.

I can say that teachers certainly talk about topics and issues that affect them, just as any group of people talk about things that affect them.

Where I work, it ain't happening at the teachers lounge, however.

The bathroom, maybe, or the hallway, but definitely not the teachers lounge or teachers cafeteria.

Maybe Kasich wants to ban teacher bathrooms as well?

I mean, if he's so concerned about teachers commiserating over things and all.

Maybe he can make all teachers bathrooms one stall?

That ought to cut down on the commiserating, eh?

Bloomberg: Students Should Skip College, Become Plumbers Instead

Hard to believe the mayor who destroyed many of the career and technological education programs in the city school system and geared the NYCDOE accountability system toward "College For All" now says this:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -Former New York City Mayor and billionaire Michael Bloomberg has some advice for high school seniors: forget college, become a plumber instead.

...

"Today if your kid wants to go to college or become a plumber, you've got to think long and hard," said Bloomberg Monday at the annual meeting of Wall Street trade group SIFMA.

"If he's not going to go to a great school and he's not super smart academically, but is smart in terms of dealing with people and that sort of thing, being a plumber is a great job because you have pricing power, you have an enormous skill set," he said.

The founder of financial data and news services company Bloomberg L.P. even went as far as to say that students considering Harvard should do the math.

You could pay $50,000 to $60,000 a year to Harvard or you could make that much as an apprentice plumber, he explained.

Too bad the Little Oligarch didn't think this bright idea before he destroyed many of the CTE programs in city schools and started bludgeoning schools over college stats.

Joe Lhota Shows Why He'll Never Get Elected To Anything

Because he has a big mouth and he opens it without thinking through what he's going to say:

Police organizations are coming down on GOP mayoral hopeful Joe Lhota for dissing Port Authority officers as "mall cops," with several telling the Daily News the comment shows the ex-MTA boss isn't fit for City Hall.

"My phone’s been ringing off the hook from my members. Some of my widows are not happy," said Paul Nunziato, head of the Port Authority PBA. "They suffered enough and then they've got to read statements like this from a guy who wants to be mayor of New York? They’re just devastated. They have no idea why he would say something like that. Neither do we."

Thirty-seven Port Authority police officers were killed in the September 11 attacks.

Lhota made the controversial comment Tuesday night when addressing a forum question about sex trafficking through Kennedy airports. "I don't think the Port Authority does a good enough job in anything they do, particularly in the area of security," the former deputy mayor said.

He noted that PAPD cops make more than their NYPD counterparts, adding, "I know I'm going to get in trouble for saying this, but they're nothing more than mall cops."

Nice job by Lhota alienating his natural base - the police and their family members.

There are plenty of PA cops who live in the Rockaways, Staten Island and elsewhere.

Good luck winning their votes, Joe.

I have long said Lhota is a moron with a big mouth who is just a moment away from imploding his campaign by either saying or doing something stupid.

Yesterday's crack against Port Authority cops probably isn't fatal, especially since there seems to be no other viable GOP candidate who can beat Lhota in the Republican primary, but it's a good example of why Lhota won't get elected.

Previous examples include shoving a reporter he was pissed at and insulting a 77 year old man at an MTA board meeting and challenging him to a fight.

If this is the best the oligarchy can do on the GOP side, they've got a thin bench.

Lucky for them they can buy the Dem side off.
