Controller John Liu is urging the MTA to "proceed cautiously" in considering whether to offer a choice contract to a firm with a reputation for delays and giant cost overruns.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority committee will vote tomorrow on a $118 million contract with Science Applications International Corp., the firm behind the problem-plagued city payroll project known as CityTime, for a new radio communications system.
"To be clear, the record with CityTime is one of enormous delays and cost overruns," Liu wrote in a letter to MTA chairman Jay Walder. "The project has been a boon to the contractor, but a boondoggle for the City. It well behooves the MTA to proceed cautiously with its project and contract award."
The cost of CityTime, initially estimated to cost $63 million, has ballooned more than ten-fold over a decade or so.
Who wants to make a bet that the MTA goes with Science Applications International Corp. despite the ballooning costs, delays and problems with CityTime?
It's kinda like how Halliburton still gets government contracts even after their abysmal record in Iraq and the Gulf of Mexico with the exploding BP oil rig.
Accountability, I guess, is only for teachers, not huge corporate conglomerates with lots of political connections.
