In 1914, John Alexander Smith, Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford, addressed the first session of his two-year lecture course as follows:
“Gentlemen, you are now about to embark on a course of studies that (will) form a noble adventure…Let me make this clear to you. ..nothing that you will learn in the course of your studies will be of the slightest possible use to you in after life – save only this – that if you work hard and intelligently, you should be able to detect when a man is talking rot, and that, in my view, is the main, if not the sole purpose of education.”
Can you think of any better lesson for children to learn these days than to be able to detect when a man is talking rot?
Between the corporate politicians and the corporate media, pretty much all we hear is rot these days.
Yes, well, I hate to say it, but, as it stands, what children seem to learn in k-4 is how to "talk rot." Start with all those cautionary tales about how if you don't then will happen to you. Children quickly detect that that's not entirely true, and while there may be some truth to it - it's essentially rot. Many teachers are essentially kids who learned to talk rot with the best of them - and don't even realize that's what they're doing.
ReplyDeleteI'm a teacher, of course, I try to train my students to detect rot by shoveling it up good (like it's hotter in the summer because Earth's orbit is elliptical) and seeing how many blindly accept the rot as not rot. I teach adults, so it's a pretty high proportion.
I wrote [blah] and [blue] above, but with brockets instead of brackets, so it came out sounding like rot.
ReplyDeletegoopDoggy, the one thing I say to my students over and over is that I will not talk jive to them. I tell them the truth about stuff. You can do this with older students, of course; it's harder with younger ones.
