Bloomberg News Gets Into Editorial Business

Announced today:

Bloomberg LP is branching out into opinion and has hired two big names to lead the project: Jamie Rubin and David Shipley.

Rubin, perhaps most famous these days for being married to Christiane Amanpour, was an assistant secretary of state under Bill Clinton and will oversee international issues. Shipley, deputy editorial and op-ed page editor at The New York Times, will focus closer to home, on the U.S. and Canada. Both will be executive editors and will report directly to Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief Matthew Winkler.

Winkler told The New York Times’s Jeremy Peters that the editorial voice will be in line with Michael Bloomberg’s, who addressed the No Labels conference this week.

“I think it’s very important that everyone understands that our editorial page is going to be, for sure, consistent with the values and beliefs of the founder — even if he happens to be mayor of New York City,” Mr. Winkler said.

Of course the editorial page will be consistent with the values and beliefs of founder Bloomberg.

Would Brezhnev have let Pravda editors freelance about Poland?

This is just another sign that Bloomberg is positioning himself for a 2012 run.

He has two major Internet news outlets in Bloomberg News and Businessweek.

He has a major news outlets in Bloomberg TV.

He's got $300 million to drop on the race (and perhaps more if he thinks he can win.)

And now he's got some shills to pontificate about centrism, bipartisanship and the evils of party identity at Bloomberg News.

Oh, yeah - he's running.
