Cuomo Drops Again In New Poll

He's still well over 50% - but the trajectory over the past three polls is downward:

ALBANY – It’s been an unlucky ’13 for Gov. Cuomo so far – relatively speaking.
His favorability rating has dropped to an all-time low since he took office Jan. 1, 2011, according to a new poll – though it’s still better than two-to-one (64-30 percent).

But the Siena College survey shows another drop in Cuomo’s favorability and job approval ratings since he rammed through the nation’s toughest gun control law in January, a month after the Newtown, Ct. elementary school massacre.

Cuomo’s favorable rating stood at 72-21 in December’s Siena poll, while the Democrat’s job approval ratings have dropped from 60-38 then and in January to 54-44 now.

And while voters said in December they’d re-elect him 62-29 over “someone else” next year, that’s now dropped to 54-37.

And just in case you think he's lost support from only Republicans over the gun issue, think again:

The fall this month was due to a decline with some Democrats and independents, not Republicans, Greenberg said, as well as New York City and upstate voters.

So he's losing support from everywhere.

There's still a lot of good news in the poll for Cuomo and compared to other prominent politicians, like Bloomberg and Obama, he's enjoying much higher approval ratings.

But the varnish is off Cuomo's star and tarnish is starting to show.

Remember, he still needs to make some decisions on the fracking issue.

If he decides to go ahead with fracking in the state, the liberals supporting him will turn.

But if he decides to continue with the fracking ban, he loses the business interests who currently fund him (and may fund him to Washington in 2016.)

Either way, he loses more support in the future, so Cuomo's downward trajectory isn't done yet.

And you can see that in how Silver and the Assembly Dems are pushing back on him in ways they didn't the first two years.

Too bad the UFT and NYSUT are too cowardly (or too corrupt) to do the same.
