The Move To End The Common Core And Race To The Top Mandates In New York

NYC Educator posted that 25 Republicans have co-sponsored an interesting bill in the New York State Assembly:

After having written my local Assembly person, Brian Curran, to fire Reformy John King, he wrote back the following:

Thank you for your recent email.  I appreciate and encourage your initiative and participation in the legislative process.

The Assembly Bill A.7994 was referred to the education committee in June of this year.  This bill’s purpose is to withdraw New York State from the Common Core and Race to the Top programs.  The mandates associated with these programs are causing undue stress on our educational institutions as well as our children’s educational experience.  The costs of implementing the provisions of these programs have proven to be a financial burden placed upon our schools. Please be advised that I am a co-sponsor of this bill.

NYC Educator writes that he is leery of Republicans, but lately has learned to be just as wary of Democrats.

The truth is, Democrats these days have done as much or more damage to schools and the teaching profession as Republicans, so I'm no longer held by tribal prejudices or political affiliations either.

I am happy to work with any politician who is working for causes or policies I believe in.

When it comes to ending Common Core and Race to the Top mandates, those of us on the left are going to have to work with some on the right.

That's the reality.

In the NY Times yesterday, Kati Haycock, president of the Education Trust, said education reformers are "terrified" that the left and the right will join together to battle the Common Core.

I for one am happy to join with 25 Republican Assembly members looking to withdraw New York State from the Common Core and Race to the Top mandates.

Surely this leftie does not agree with these 25 Republicans on many other policies and issues.

But I agree with them on withdrawing New York State from Common Core and Race to the Top mandates, and that's what matters to me.

  3. I hear people frame some these education discussions within the blue/red, right/left dichotomies of old and I think, what do you have to do to get people to see the FOX/MSNBC frame for politics is a fantasy, especially on education issues?

    Drives me crazy.

There is little difference between the Republican and Democratic establishments - Christie/Bush/Spellings are right on board with Obama/Duncan/Cuomo/Rahm.

Doesn't matter if there's a (D) or an (R) after the name anymore - they're all owned by the same corporate interests and Wall Street plutocrats.

We truly our owned by the oligarchs, but so long as we continue to buy into the phony distinctions, we'll never be able to extricate some of the power away from them.
