From the time I signed off last night to now, Thompson lost 0.02%, de Blasio's percentage stayed the same.
As of 7:15 AM, de Blasio has 90,518 more votes than Thompson.
There are still votes to be counted, but if the trajectory of the race stays essentially the same, will Thompson challenge de Blasio and try and force a runoff?
The public polls showed Thompson losing to de Blasio in a runoff by 12 points or more.
Thompson lost last night's primary to de Blasio by a little more than 14 points.
While he would have a shot to beat de Blasio in a runoff, it would be an uphill battle for him.
The damage done to the eventual Democratic nominee might not be fatal, but it would definitely hurt.
Lhota would be getting ready for the general election while the Dems would still be damaging each other like they have the last couple of weeks.
I am sure that the powers that be who were behind Thompson's campaign would like for him to force a runoff.
After all, the reason D'amato and Tisch and some of the other plutocrats and their functionaries backed Thompson was to cause maximum damage in the Democratic primary and, if possible, have an anemic candidate like Thompson in the general election.
If anybody gives Joe Lhota a shot to win, it's an awful candidate like Bill Thompson.
Think 2009 when he ran against Bloomberg and seemed to snooze through the campaign, some days barely even getting out on the campaign trail.
So I'm sure Tisch and D'amato and Bloomberg and the rest would love for Thompson to try and force a runoff and keep de Blasio battling a Dem until he can turn to Lhota.
The question is, will Thompson want to do that?
I'm betting if the promises of payoffs are big enough, he will do whatever they ask him to do.
Hate to be cynical, but after the Wayne Barrett articles (here and here) on Thompson and the NY Times article on Thompson and the City & State article on Thompson, I happen to think he's the bigger crook left in the race and I do not trust him to do the right thing.

As you point out, he threw the election in 2009, so why should we expect him to not do something similar now, especially since Tisch is calling the shots for him?

Not close.
Baghdad Bob is the name of the game. And we now see something that draws Thompson and Mulgrew together: total detachment from reality.
Thompson: voters want my vision, it was so close.
Mulgrew: count every ballot. (hello, the very few ballots left to count couldn't add up to make this race close, unless your goal is to have a protracted pre-run-off Dem battle with Unity embarassing itself telling about how Thompson is the man to address the two cities disparity. Hah. (I'm beginning to think that the UFT has some collective denial disorder a la Baghdad Bob.)

Maybe Tisch has a heart and wants to avoid seeing more associations of her and Thompson, so as to avoid sinking the campaign.
