A Very Solid Win For Tish James Over Dan Squadron Last Night

Turnout was pretty good for a runoff election with nothing else at stake.

Tish James got over 111,000 votes.

Some pundits were saying turnout was going to be about 100,000 overall for the runoff.

It was closer to 187,000

And James won by 36,000 votes.

A very solid win for James and a stinging defeat for Dan Squadron.

Given what a scummy campaign he ran, it couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

James gave an emotional speech last night after her victory:

James was briefly overcome with emotion as she thanked the boisterous crowd.

Today you elected me the first..." she paused, struggling for composure before continuing, "...The first woman of color to hold citywide office."

Fans broke into cheers as she told them, "I am so proud of what we accomplished together, and yes, I'm proud we made history tonight."

James then launched into a fiery speech about addressing troubled schools, the NYPD’s stop and frisk tactics and an affordable housing crunch -- and railed against the “right-wing Republican” forces President Obama is fighting in Washington over health care.

It was very good to see her win this race.

  2. What I'm enjoying about this is that she won despite Squadron's robocalls, his support by the newspapers and the endorsements of such biggies as Chuck Schumer. This should send some kind of message to the elites.

    1. Great points you make here. Basically the Working Families Party, along with the unions, beat the hell out of Chuck Schumer's Wall Street-friendly candidate.

And the DN and Post lost their endorsements - cherry on top!

  3. Another rebuttal of the Bloomberg administration and all those who claim to represent the average New Yorker. Squadron was a shill for the power brokers comes from wealth and no doubt was positioning himself for higher public office while not caring squat about the public interest. I hope the DeBlasio eventual victory will bring forth a true third party alternative in NYC and NYS politics.

    1. It was very important for Squadron to go down. Not only is a he hedge fund shill, he ran a dirty campaign. Good for him to go down. Alas, he still has a Senate seat. But at least he is positioning himself for mayor in four years.
