A new Quinnipiac University poll of Florida voters was anything but encouraging to Cuomo’s widely described interest in entering the 2016 presidential contest.
The poll, released Friday, not surprisingly found Hillary Rodham Clinton the runaway favorite, at 64 percent, among Democrats asked to pick their favorite presidential contender. She was followed by Vice President Joe Biden, a distant second with 9 percent.
What was surprising was that a “progressive’’ favorite, freshman Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, placed third, with 5 percent of the tally, and that Cuomo was in a three-way time for fourth, with a mere 1 percent, with Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner.
Now I know we're a long way from the actual voting and a lot can happen between now and then.
I also know that if Clinton drops out of the race, it jumbles everything up and Sheriff Andy could suddenly vault into contention.
But let's state three things about Cuomo's chances regarding the presidential race in 2016:
1. As of 2014, he is languishing with a few others at the bottom of the barrel in the race.
2. He has yet to receive any scrutiny at the national level. Take a look at Chris Christie to see what happens when a regional candidate gets some scrutiny at the national level - everything he does and has done gets put under the microscope.
3. Sheriff Andy's union-bashing, pro-tax cut stances may not work so well in a Dem primary - they're better suited for a general election.
And of course there really is a fourth consideration here too - if Clinton doesn't drop out, then Cuomo is done for 2016 anyway.
So if I had to put money down on where this is going, I'd have to say that Sheriff Andy isn't going anywhere in national politics.
He can dream about it, of course - dreaming is free, as Deborah Harry once said...
It wont happen.. and even before Bridgegate.. I did not see Christie winning a Presidential election either..
ReplyDeleteI agree - I thought he was too dirty to withstand scrutiny.
DeleteIf it is a Clinton accession and she's Prez til 2024, Andy would need to be in his fourth term as gov to be a "player." Lord knows it's "possible" but what would we do with ourselves during the fourth term of an Andrew Cuomo besides start jumping off the nearest lemming cliff.
ReplyDeleteGod help us - four terms with Sheriff Andy? NY State would look like Galt Gulch by then.
DeleteI hope this does not mean we are stuck with the Sherriff--he's done very little that I can appreciate as a resident!
ReplyDeleteI think the longer this sheriff sticks around, the more people are going to want him to get back up on his high horse and ride off. I don't see him lasting past two terms. He's got too many enemies, and his "My Way Or The Highway" shtick only lasts for so long.
