Governor Andrew Cuomo has purchased a reminder to Democratic voters about Tuesday's primary, in the form of $850,000 in broadcast television ads, according to F.C.C. filings reviewed by Capital.
The latest buy, running from Sept. 1 until the close of polls on Tuesday, September 9, is part of the most significant ad campaign Cuomo has run since late July, and is more than seven times the $114,000 buy made the week prior (from Aug. 21-27).
The filings that are currently available from New York broadcast stations indicate that the ads were placed in the Buffalo and New York City broadcast markets.
The Cuomo campaign has been aggressively selling his running mate, former congresswoman Kathy Hochul, to downstate voters, in the face of a primary challenge from Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu. Hochul hails from Western New York, where the campaign is hoping her prior supporters will turn out on Tuesday.
The campaign's largest volume purchase—538 ad spots—will run on WPIX in New York City. That entire buy is only costing Cuomo $35,600 (versus $190,700 for just 95 spots on WCBS).
Think they're not worried about Tim Wu knocking off Kathy Hochul?
Think again.
Cuomo's strongest support in the state comes in New York City.
The only reason he's running ads in New York City is because he's worried Kathy Hochul, with little name recognition, could lose to Tim Wu for the lieutenant governor spot.
