“If you really want good people in government, you have to offer something of a competitive salary,” said State Senator Tony Avella, a Democrat from Queens. “If my wife wasn’t working, I’d have a tough time carrying the mortgage on my one-family house on this salary.”
Perhaps that's why Avella joined the corporate-friendly Independent Democratic Conference and will push corporate-friendly policies like tax cuts for rich people, benefit cuts for working people, and charter schools for all.
No better way for a politician to make the mortgage payment than pushing policies that make rich people happy and in the mood to "give" to them, either in the form of campaign contributions or future career considerations once the political days are over.
I'm skeptical a pay raise would change Avella's essential nature, however, or any of the other whores in Albany.
A guy like Avella who's willing to turn 180 on his supposed political beliefs, that guy's for sale all the time, no matter the base salary.
