Praying To Reverse Bloomberg's Budget Cuts

Taking the fight to a higher power:

At roughly 60 city churches and other houses of worship this weekend, congregations will pray for Mayor Bloomberg to reverse "immoral" cuts to schools, a group of religious leaders told the Daily News.

After protests and marches failed to sway the mayor, the religious leaders say they are taking their cause to a Higher Power.

"Because we are religious leaders, we're going to pray the Lord will touch the heart of the mayor and the City Council," said Bishop Orlando Findlayter, chairman of Churches United to Save and Heal and pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship in Brooklyn. "Any cut to education will be detrimental."

The ministers and other religious leaders are also sending a letter to the mayor asking him to rethink his position on the so-called millionaire's tax as well.

"My congregation and my prayer ministry will be praying for the mayor," said Pastor Kevin Osbourne of Refuge Church of God in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Praying for the Lord to touch the heart of the mayor.

Sounds like a good idea.

If the mayor had a heart to begin with.

But the coverage of 60 churches having a mass prayer to reverse the mayor's budget cuts and layoffs (even as he ratchets up technology spending in schools by $550 million) - well, that just might be effective.

Bloomberg doesn't have any shame, but with 37% approval in the city and 78% disapproval for education policies among school parents, the more public demonstrations against his outrageous budget, the better.

The pressure is mounting.
