Mr. Gibson has shown himself to be a wild card on state matters, too: As a vocal critic of Common Core education standards, the third-term lawmaker has taken issue with Mr. Cuomo’s recent attacks on teachers’ unions, a traditionally Democratic-leaning constituency. “Teachers are not the problem,” Mr. Gibson said.Karen E. Magee, president of the New York State United Teachers, which has supported Mr. Gibson in the past, said he would have a “good chance” of winning the influential labor group’s backing for governor, if it were deciding on an endorsement today.“He values and respects teachers and the work we do, and I would not say that that’s anywhere aligned with the current governor of the State of New York,” Ms. Magee said.
Until the teachers unions stop acting as functionaries of the Democratic Party and actually stick it to Dem politicians when they stick it to labor, the neo-liberal Dems controlling the party are going to continue to look for labor money/support then sell us out right after the election.
If only the unions had played coy before the 2014 election and, you know, not ensured the Working Families Party endorsed Cuomo over Zephyr Teachout or helped Kathy Hochul beat Teachout's running mate Tim Wu, maybe people would take them seriously when they make noise about not supporting Dems next time around.
As it stands now, I certainly don't take them seriously.
