Tough Times

Bowie's dead, Cuomo's off the hook for Moreland tampering, the Supreme Court is set to destroy public sector unions and Rupert Murdoch is getting married to Jerry Hall.

Tough times indeed.

  2. The plaintiff teachers in the Friedrichs case are paid trolls. If anyone actually thinks that these teachers are actually that stupid you are crazy. These plaintiffs have been paid a huge amount of money and we all know where the money is coming from. This is a SHAM of major proportions. The root to all evil is money and never more true here in this ridiculous case of I don't want any union protections and I make too much money. It is quite hysterical how people are actually believing this is real. This case is such a set up it is quite mind boggling. And, where in the world did you ever see a case go to the supreme court in a flash!!! Where were the other proceedings?? Is it not a final step when you go to the SUPREME COURT?? Boy oh boy did the supreme court get this case in a jippy. THis is all bull shit people, and we the hard working people are getting shafted that this case alone is sitting in the SUPREME COURT! Haters have become of the population of choice because do people really think that unions which make up approx. 7 percent of the work force should have to be dealing with this american law bull shit?? We need a wolf like response some how to the jerk offs like Scott Walker and his backers the fagot Koch brothers who should be sent off to Syria and fight for ISIS people if they have so much hate in them.

  3. Point is the other side trolled and found them. The other side spends their energy on offense. The unions so called play a weak defense and never get out in front of anything as much as get run over by it then declare victory. Right Mulgrew?

    1. Just remember the phrase son, right to work (for less) state is what you will be working in unless the SUPREME COURT decides to not give in to the reformies and billionaires.

  4. No, Sean. The unions play Capitulation. It is a new version of Monopoly.

  5. If the Unions lose this case, does that mean that Weingarten doesn't get to speak prime time at the Democratic National Coronation?

    1. If Weingarten gets appointed to some bullsh*t in the Clinton Admin, I will puke. On the other hand, why would Clinton do that? She'd lose her puppet on the AFT. I guess Mikey could replace her. Mikey's a good lapdog (just ask Cuomo). However, Mikey, doesn't have the national appeal.

  6. NYSUT destroyed itself by ignoring the members for 30 years. I cannot wait to get out of paying dues. NYSUT has sold us out for decades.

    1. Think about what you are saying. For approx. $1000 the union does your bargaining rights, medical, job protections,,,,isn't that one thousand spent wisely?? You rather the DOE decide your fate?? YOu are worrying about paying a measly payment for your family protections against layoff?? Come on fella, stop buying into the bull shit that the reformies are selling you. When you go out alone you will die as the DOE is so dysfunctional they will kill you as long as you do not have the UFT protecting you. I don't know just sayin.

    2. That person is giving you good advice. Remember when you are alone and in the system of right to work (for less) state. Do not become a sucker

  7. You can always go work for eva moskowitz and work till your skin washes off your hands for a bag of peanuts and do not forget to come in on saturday...no union to protest against workers forced to work on saturday and here is the kicker, no pay for saturday its on the arm. Yeah right to work for less state,,,yeah I am not paying my union dues....

  8. The UFT is a bad guard dog. But a bad guard dog is better than no guard dog. As much as I hate what the UFT has been doing for the past decade, they are the only perimiter defense we have against the DOE who is licking at their lips right now. If we loose this case, not only will the teaching profession be in a very dangerous situation, but there will be massive internal strife among teachers. Just take a look at the above posts: some can't wait to bail the UFT while others will continue to pay. However, we all will still be working in the same schools. (For the time being at least) Word will get out very quickly in each school as to who is paying and who is not. If teachers try to lie about being a paid member, the UFT rep at each school will have a list that proves who in fact is a paid member. It will be like a scene from the tv show SURVIVOR with two tribes up against each other. I hope I am worng but I can totally see that this is what we will be seeing soon.

    1. This is very true. I had not thought about this. In fact, what prevents a supervisor from inspecting the list? At least now, if a supervisor asks why you pay the union you can say "because it's mandatory." But, post Freidrichs every single round of dues collection becomes a referendum on collective bargaining. No stability at all.

    2. Principals union will also be effected by this case. I will be dying to know if my principal decides to stay in the CSA. (Principals union)

  9. I'm retiring in about 4 years. When the unions lose this, what's the reality here in NYC? Will we lose our contracts? Will we be given new salaries, no benefits, and no pension? I'm serious. Does it work like this or are people making a big deal?

    1. I have the exact same question. I want to know about my S.T.A.M.P . (Salary, Tenure, and my Pension) Hey, I just invented a new acronym!

  10. I honestly have to shake my head at what some very educated people wrote here today. This is exactly why the UFT and NYSUT have been able to repeatedly sell us out and still remain in existence - even thrive.

Is it something in the water? If the Supremes rule in favor of Friedrichs it does not mean the end of our union(s). It means they can no longer take us for granted. They have to actually start caring about what we want, think and feel. Right now we are all virtually helpless.

The union has a monopoly. I am a very strong unionist and recognize the need for a strong union, but I also believe the UFT and NYSUT are both a disgrace and have failed us time after time.

I hope Friedrichs wins. I hope the union has to start caring about what I want as a member. I am sick of paying dues and being lied to about every issue.

The union are counting on people like those writing here who believe we have to put up with lousy representation and should be grateful for it. We need to have a strong union and right now we don't.

    1. This was an interesting response. Can you comment on today's Action Alert by Mulgrew and how we're losing everything?

    2. He's definitely going to lose, or at least he should. The union will have to respond. Fat Cat...or nimble and resourceful. They'll have to do a hell of a lot more with a ton less. Later paid hotel parties? What will the UFT do with the less it gets? More of the same means less and less...

    3. The UFT needs to restructure to survive. They need to start to become responsible to the rank and file instead of throwing us under the bus so that they can have a seat at the table with plutocrats and shyster politicians. The more thatulgrew fear mongrels about the Friedrichs vs California case, the more members will be lost. This case is a rebuke of the failed leadership of Weingarten and Mulgrew.
