UFT Spends $1.4 Million On Pro-Cuomo Ad

No, seriously:

That ad - which they spent $1.4 million on, btw - functions as a pro-Cuomo ad, talking about the governor's Common Core Task Force and making it sound like Cuomo is doing the right thing on education.

The truth is, he's not.

Test scores are STILL part of APPR teacher evaluations, either local tests or the Regents exams.

The governor himself said it.

So the claim in the ad that Cuomo's doing right is, well, wrong.

The public education system remains as test-centric as ever, nothing's changed post-Cuomo CCSS Task Force.

But you wouldn't know that from this ad.

A while back I blogged how Cuomo's talking up community schools and sounding like Mulgrew in the bargain, coupled with the UFT's refusal to have Cuomo's odious 2015 education law thrown in the garbage where it belongs, was a sign that the UFT and Cuomo had a backroom deal going.

This ad is further confirmation of it - your dues money going to run an ad that helps out Cuomo politically.

  1. The ad is for the Mulgrew re-election campaign. They run these whenever there is an election coming.

    1. Sure, but it also functions as a political ad for Cuomo. Cuomo's ed numbers are in the toilet, per Siena. Having the UFT say nice stuff about him in a $1.4 million dollar ad buy helps him out.

    2. We touch base with the DOL about these commercials and possible violations of Election Rules and financing. Hard to prove. Especially since he's not mentioned and we don't see his mug.

    4. This ad is as preposterous as those sponsored by the Committee to Save NY. Leaders speak truth to power...Mulgrew is just a suck up...but he does it using our money and making clear to our enemies that we are powerless. PATHETIC!

  2. Kissing Cuomo's ass is not a good way to get Mulgoon reelected. Cuomo is no friend to us and this pandering ad just proves how out of touch the UFT is. They should be walking on egg shells right now due to the Supreme Court case that is going down. Why they are throwing cash on ads like this is beyond my realm of understanding.

  3. Another 5% just made the decision to drop out of the UFT. Does the UFT even give a shit? It sure doesn't seem so.

  4. I WILL NOT PAY DUES TO THE UFT TO SUPPORT GOVERNOR CUOMO. HIS TRACK RECORD ON EDUCATION, TESTING AND TEACHERS WORK ENVIRONMENT IS HORRIFIC! I CATEGORICALLY REJECT THIS WASTE OF UFT TREASURE!!!!

  6. Is this paid for by our dues? Or is it COPE money? I see that COPE cards are being sent to retirees who don't contribute.
Can we get a breakdown to clarify the expense?
Seems awfully political to me, certainly a different category than negotiating class size.

  7. This is another reason why I hope Friedrichs prevails in the US Supreme Court. The UFT/NYSUT repeatedly thumbs their noses as we, the members.

    1. If you believe thats that's answer then you are very misinformed. Vote your shady union leadership out. The union isn't the problem. You are the union. Get rid of the slimeballs.

  8. NYSUTS comments about Cuomo's state of the state address were pathetic. NYSUT needs to dissolve and make way for a new union that we can all be proud of of.

Where are proposals to repeal last year's APPR law? Independent observers? The matrix? SLOs for every teacher in K-8 and some in 9-12? This is insanity. NYSUT said nothing about the evaluation law yesterday. NYSUT is taking our dues and giving us nothing in return.

  9. Didn't Cuomo just propose giving the charter school crowd another $27 million? The UFT is a disgrace.

  10. Wow, so not only do our dues pay for Michael Mildew's second pension, but we now also have the privilege of paying for television ads that are simultaneous re-election ads for our embarrassing President and fellations of our Reptilian Governor.

Can Unity become any more sycophantic to those in power? Sure, just wait and see...

    1. Oh, hell yes! I am there, brother. It is past time. Washington State teachers had job actions over this APPR crap. They beat it. In the '60s all of the Teachers in the state of Florida struck. We can so do this.

  12. This ad makes me furious. I know that cooler heads around here are trying to keep us from deserting the UFT once Freidrichs is handed down. But, is it really desertion if we seek new representation? I'll gladly pay the $1,000 to a real union that really represents me. But, this ad buy is so insulting.

I assume we can't decertify the UFT at the building level. But, maybe something else can be done. Perhaps giving to an unofficial union? Maybe my line of thinking is merely what the unity gang crows about when they cry "dual unionism." But, unions started out as mutual aid societies, and that's kind of what I'm looking for.

So frustrated with the out-of-touch UFT.

  13. Anyone who has worked in the NYC schools during Cuomo's terms knows the pain and horror that his actions have caused students and staff. That the president of the UFT has the audacity to spend members dues monies on promoting any aspect of the governors agenda is truly beyond belief. They are worried plenty about the supreme court ruling on dues check-off, as they should be. With collaborations such as this many members will welcome the opportunity to disassociate themselves with this self serving leadership.
They are certainly not interested in those they represent!

  14. You can watch Mulgrew's video all you want here. It's all propaganda. Do not be fooled. Mulgrew, are you trying to run for something or what? Are you truly walking the walk for teachers? I don't think so! Cheryl Smith it's all here! Spread the word to our NY City friends that JIA is who you need!
