From the Daily News:
ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo has joined the fight to change the state’s new Common Core curriculum.
Cuomo, as part of his budget presentation Tuesday, announced plans for a
special advisory panel that will recommend “corrective action” in the
way the state implements the curriculum — which is part of a national
effort to raise academic standards.
“I support the Common Core agenda,” Cuomo said. “But the way the Common
Core has been managed by the Board of Regents is flawed. There’s too
much uncertainty, confusion and anxiety.”
The tests linked to the new curriculum have sparked outrage among parents around the state.
Cuomo said the panel will issue its recommendations before the Legislature ends its session in June.
...
Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch expressed support for Cuomo’s
test ban for young students and said she was willing to work with the
governor on changes to the Common Core rollout.
Oh, goody - another Cuomo commission.
I'm sure this will end with meaningful changes to the Common Core implementatinon.
No - it really won't.
Cuomo already says he "supports the Common Core agenda.”
Tisch already says she is "willing to work with the
governor on changes to the Common Core rollout."
While I doubt Cuomo would be so audacious as to put Tisch on the commission, you can bet Tisch and Commissioner King will have allies on it looking into the Common Core implementation.
And you can bet that whatever changes are recommended by the commission, they will be Tisch- and Cuom-approved changes.
Which means very little actual change.
This commission is simply a way for Cuomo to look like he is addressing public concerns over the state's education reform agenda without actually doing anything about those concerns.
In short, it's a dog-and-pony show.
