Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel (D) "has broached a touchy subject during private meetings with aldermen to solicit their ideas on budget and ethics reform: cutting the nation's second-largest City Council in half," the Chicago Sun Times reports.
"Several aldermen, who asked to remain anonymous, said they were stunned when Emanuel opened the discussion by asking them point-blank, 'What do you think about going down to 25 aldermen?'"
"It was a bold opening line for a mayor-elect who will need every vote he can get to reorganize the Council, pass his programs and solve a budget and pension crisis that literally has Chicago on the brink of bankruptcy."
It was a bold move all right - Emanuel bought most of these crooks off before the election, now he's going to fuck them afterwards.
And of course he'll cite the need to move fast on pressing financial issues, fiscal crisis, blah, blah, blah as the rationale for getting rid of half the City Council.
Which is all jive, of course.
He just doesn't want to have to share power in any way, shape, or form.
The next gambit in the move toward fascism - abolish the city council.
That'll come next.
Call it Emanuel's Beer Hall Putsch.
Oh, the irony.
What's the matter Chicago? You people actually elected him after seeing NYC's Bloomberg's bullshit? You will rue the day. Thanks for the post RBE
ReplyDeleteSometimes all it takes is a (D) after the name to get elected in a big city, no matter how crooked the person is. Even if they are closeted Republicans. And after getting elected the disaster capitalists go on a rampage.
ReplyDeleteIn one of Matt Taibi's Rolling Stone articles he details how Chicago sold all of its parking meters to an Arab country. Now, peeps from Chicago have to pay way more in charges, 24/7. No free days...even for Christmas, Sundays, Passover, etc. It was all hidden from the public through the use of innocent sounding shell corporation names. The general public never knew that the meters they sunk their coin into was sold to a Middle Eastern firm...Understood that cities are broke, and are selling off assets, however, why the secrecy? Why not come out and tell the public directly who's buying what? Maybe there's a little kickback for the pol who brokers the deal? Again, you're right...disaster economics makes a small number of people rich.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a link to the article? Thanks. I believe it's hopey-changey's new world order, set up so Americans pay for their own demise. And Chicago has been in the center of all the organization of it. De-education of the masses is one of the spokes in the wheel.
ReplyDeleteHere's the Matt Taibbi link about the Chicago sell-off:

As you read this article,, you'll see how the wealthy and powerful in this country manipulate "disaster" politics to their benefit. Public properties sold off for pennies on the dollar, while the public is in the dark as to the proceedings.
