Mike Mulgrew And Andrew Cuomo Meet For A Late Lunch

Sent along by Harris Lirtzman is this interesting tidbit from Governor Cuomo's July schedule:

Thursday July 16, 2015: Dock's Restaurant 633 Third Avenue, New York NY - 3:40 PM
Meeting with Michael Mulgrew, President of the United Federation of Teachers
Staff Participant - Bill Mulrow, Secretary to the Governor

Anybody want to hazard a theory on what was discussed at that meeting in July?

There's a story out today at State of Politics about how Cuomo is making nice with former enemies like Chuck Schumer and some state workers unions in an attempt to isolate Bill de Blasio even more than he already is.

Over the summer, Cuomo was gathering as many former de Blasio allies to himself as well, people like Melissa Mark-Viverito and Tish James, in order to isolate de Blasio and make life uncomfortable for the mayor.

Could be this meeting was part of that same strategy.

Or it could be that Mulgrew wanted to meet with Cuomo so he could let the governor know just what a mess he has made of public education in this state and implore him to change course.

Or it could be that, just as the animosity between professional wrestlers is all phonied up for the camera, the animosity between Mulgrew and Cuomo is as fake as Sandra Lee's margarita mix and they were just catching up for old time's sake.

Your thoughts?

  1. Whatever was said between our Reptilian Governor and our inarticulate, faux tough guy President, rank and file teachers are sure to get the short end of the stick.

  2. The two of them really having nothing in common-except they are part of the Democratic Party. Since they met July 16,--so maybe they talked about the poor play of the NY Mets-and how they would never make it to the World Series and the only political thing they could agree on-was that Donald Trump would not be running for President.

  3. Reminds me of when Randi met Bloomberg for lunch after avoiding all contact with him. She then presented the 2005 contract.

  4. All this is is more proof that our union leaders have been completely co-opted by our avowed enemies. The deform legislation that was adopted late last March is as despicable today as it was then. No decent union leader would be sitting down with the man who has vowed to destroy us.

  6. Couple of meatheads having lunch. Who cares? Couldn't imagine anything that interests me less than knowing what those two goons had to say to each other. Cuomo sounds like he has an awful speech impediment. Mulgrew sounds like a wise guy off the Staten Island docks from the days of yore. They probably couldn't even understand each other. Though, I'm sure they pretended to. They're like brothers from another mother.

  7. I maintain that the fight is a fight for the constiuencies of the left. It's a real fight and (notwishatdnig Harrris L's assertion to the contrary) no democratic has held city wide of state office without the WFP support and the acceptance of the left. BDB has it. Cuomo doesn't. The point -make BDB seem weak and ineffectual- is so that people on the left loose trust in him. Within that context, MM has got to meet Cuomo, as Cuomo has a huge stake in almost everything the UFT wants. MM, on the other hand, is the 31st most influential New Yorker according to NY Observer -more than any other union leader- and Cuomo had better be meeting him for lunch every now and then. It would really dumb politics if he weren't.
